A 49-year-old male inmate at Mackinac County Jail was found dead in his cell early Monday morning, February 13. Sheriff Scott Strait said he believes the man hung himself.

The man’s name and place of origin is being withheld until next of kin have been notified. The man, who was awaiting sentencing on a charge of felonious assault, was the only person in the cell at the time, the Sheriff’s Department reports.

An investigation was started immediately by the Sheriff’s Department, an internal affairs team from Michigan Sheriff’s Association, and the Mackinac County medical examiner.
