LHS’s Michael Green Up for Top U.P. Wrestler Award
Michael Green, in competition at the SAC meet in Cheboygan, has been nominated as one of four athletes for the Upper Peninsula Mr. Wrestler Award. LaSalle High School (LHS) senior Michael Green has been selected as a finalist for the Upper Peninsula Wrestling Coaches Association (UPWCA) Mr. Wrestler of the Year Award.
Four nominees were chosen by the UPWCA from the Michigan High School Athletic Association Upper Peninsula wrestling programs. Joining Green as candidates for this prestigious award that will be announced at the U.P. State Finals in Marquette the weekend of Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18, are Joe McAllister (171) of Sault High, Shane Dugan (119) of Ispheming High School, and Pat Magdaleno of Marquette High School.
Green, just the second Saints wrestler to be selected for this award (in addition to Billy Rickley, 2004), is one of four captains and a four-year veteran for Coach Harvey Bentley. He has recorded a 45-7 record during his final season for the Saints and 146-44 overall during his career at LHS and shared the Most Valuable Wrestler Award as a junior with Rand Litzner after registering 44 victories. He finished second (152) at the Upper Peninsula Finals last season.
"Michael has worked extremely hard and gave 100 percent during his career and each year has improved," said Coach Bentley. "During his sophomore season, he became more dedicated and that is why he has improved."
Green wrestled in the 112-class as a freshman, 135 during his sophomore season, 152 last year, and at 160 during his final campaign.
"There are times that an athlete grows physically during his high school career and Michael has, going from 112 to 160, but his wrestling skills haven't suffered, as his skills and physical ability grew together," the coach said.
Each coach from the 18 high schools will have a vote on this award that includes Sault High, Maplewood Baptist, Rudyard, Newberry, Manistique, Munising, Escanaba, Gladstone, Menominee, Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Marquette, Gwinn, Ispheming High, Negaunee, Norway, and West Iron County.
Green is currently third on the all-time victory list at LHS with 146 victories, behind Billy Rickley (2004) with 162, Andy Fitzpatrick (2005) 148, Matt Beaudoin (2004) 121, Rand Litzner (2005) 120, Tom Horn (1993) 109, Jason Frazier (1994) 104, Sam Fitzpatrick (2007) presently at 104, Tim Moore (1994) 102, Mike Amacher (1999) 100, and Aaron Rickley (2004) 100.
The Saints, ranked sixth in the Upper Peninsula by the Coaches Association, have two meets remaining on their schedule, with the districts Thursday, February 16, at Rudyard and Upper Peninsula State Finals Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18 at Marquette. If St. Ignace wins the
districts, the team will advance to the state regionals at Newberry.
