Comets Split Games In and Out of League
Andy Solomonson Mackinaw City Mackinaw City split two games, defeating Pellston 51-49 in a nonconference game Tuesday, February 7, before falling to Vanderbilt 55-43 during a Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) contest Friday, February 10.
Comets Sting Hornets in
Comeback
The Comets trailed by 17 points in the third quarter before staging a come-from-behind home win over the Hornets.
Eric Teysen scored 17 points with four rebounds and two assists and Chase Closs added 17 points to lead Mackinaw City. Logan Paquet chipped in 11 points, five steals, and two assists, Matt Alexander notched four points and five boards, and Andy Solomonson tallied two points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Mackinaw City, 9-6 on the season, trailed 29-18 at halftime before Pellston extended the lead to 17 points, but three Paquet steals spearheaded a 9-0 run.
Teysen tallied a key putback, the senior took a charge that was huge late in the game, and Closs drained a triple that all helped the Comets in the comeback.
"We played huge with the steals, putbacks, defensive plays, and long range shooting," said Comets Coach Dave Huntington.
Pellston led 14-6 after the first eight minutes and held a 29-18 halftime lead after a 15-12 advantage in the second quarter.
The Comets started the comeback by outscoring the Hornets 1610 in the third quarter and completed the non-league match-up with a 17-10 margin in the final period. Turnovers Hurt Comets in Defeat
Turnovers hurt the Comets during the NLC and the host Yellowjackets shot the ball very well, as Mackinaw City fell to 6-2 in the league standings.
Teysen scored 16 points with eight rebounds, Closs added 12 points and five boards, Paquet chipped in seven points, four steals, and two assists, Solomonson notched four points and five rebounds, and Austin Martin tallied four points.
Vanderbilt led 14-7 after the first eight minutes and outscored Mackinaw City 13-7 in the second quarter for a 27-14 halftime lead.
The Comets just couldn't find the offensive range as the Yellowjackets increased their lead to 40-22 with a 13-8 margin in the third quarter before Mackinaw City completed the game with a 21-15 advantage in the final period.
Mackinaw City entertains Wolverine in a NLC contest Thursday, February 16, and travels to Harbor Light Christian Tuesday, February 21, to battle the Swordsmen in a league game.
