Coach Robbins began his coaching career at the junior high level for four years and then moved up to head the junior varsity program for 17 years, with thenvarsity coach John Akkanen, before taking over as the varsity coach four years ago.

"I made the decision to step down after talking it over with my family," said Coach Robbins. "It was a privilege to coach with John Akkanen while he was the varsity coach and I was at the junior varsity level."

The 1971 graduate of Brimley High School has coached with junior varsity coach Scout Hester for the last four years, and that has been a good relationship.

"We worked well together and I hope he is given the opportunity to take over as varsity coach," Coach Robbins said.

The highlights of Coach Robbin's career were coaching his son, Cody, for three years and winning district titles in 2004 and 2005, as well as sharing the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference championship in 2006.

"We weren't expected to win the district crown in 2004 and that was very special for the entire team," he said.

Four seniors on this year's team, Kellen Perron, Derek Parish, Travis Lynn, and Cody Robbins, have been on the varsity for three seasons and were four of the top players coached by Robbins, along with classmates Brad Cameron and Mike Dubois, who spent two years with Coach Robbins.

Other top players for the Bays under Coach Robbins were Karl Perron, Al Bertram, Derek Beseau, Derek Bowen, Chris Winkler, and Nate Halvorsen.

"The entire team was disappointed about the outcome of our tournament game, but I have no regrets about leaving the program that is in good shape with the talent that is returning and coming up at the younger level," the coach said.

Reg Robbins and his wife, Laurie, a middle school English and history teacher at the Sault Middle School for 28 years, have two sons, Kurt, 2000 alumnus of Brimley, and Cody, who will be graduated this year.
