Workshop To Focus on Deer Population Sat.
A public workshop which will outline how the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) estimates deer population will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn in Marquette Saturday, April 22.
"Our constituents are in integral component of why we do what we do in the DNR," said Director Rebecca Humphries. "This workshop continues our efforts to offer opportunities for exchange between the DNR and the hunting community and other interested stakeholders."
From December 2005 through February 2006, the DNR held 21 public meetings across the state, discussing deer population goals. One result from the meetings was a need to continue meeting with stakeholders to discuss DNR deer number estimates. Many of those who attended voiced their concerns about how the DNR estimates deer population.
"The DNR needs to understand all deer-related concerns," said Wildlife Chief Bill Moritz, "and we are committed to working with our constituents to improve our communications."
Several members of the DNR Commission, including Commissioner John Madigan, will be available for a listening session following the workshop.
Additional workshops in the Lower Peninsula will be scheduled soon for the coming months.
