It's May! Just a few more weeks and school will be out for summer vacation. Speaking of school, All Children Exercising Simultaneously (ACES) took place Wednesday, May 3, at Engadine School. Project ACES takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, along with National Physical Education Week. Since 1989, millions of children from all over the world exercise together to promote proper health and fitness habits.

The Newberry Eagles Club will have an all-you-can-eat fish fry, Friday, May 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the club on M-28 in Newberry. If you don't care for fish, you can choose from their Friday menu or their special for the night, frog legs.

The Hulbert American Legion Post 393 will have its annual pig roast, Saturday, May 6. The allyou can-eat roast pork and beef dinner, along with homemade desserts, vegetables, and beverages, will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

It's clean-up day for Garfield Township residents Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until the dumpsters are full. Spring cleanup will be for Garfield Township residents only, and it's on a first-come, first-served basis. One pickup load per household is allowed. To save money, they will have only one location this year, which will be at the Garfield Township Hall parking lot in Engadine. Naubinway residents will have to use this drop-off location, too. No disposal is allowed unless a township official is at the location. For more information on what items are accepted in the dumpster, or other questions, call the Garfield Township Hall at (906) 477-6481.

Curtis will host an annual Walleye Jamboree Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 26, through Sunday, May 28. Fish the South and Big Manistique Lakes for the largest walleye, and win the grand prize. All proceeds go toward fish planting. For entry fee and more information, call (906) 586-3454.

Happy anniversary to Ron and Jackie Weger May 8.

I received this note and would like to pass it on to you from Carol Norman, a nurse practitioner:

"Often times we take for granted the things we have in the United States, for example, a pair of shoes."

Carol's son is serving in Iraq and is working with a group of Marines who are in the process of collecting shoes for children living in that country.

Carol added, "He told me they were also collecting toys, but they need shoes most of all." She is on a mission to collect shoes for the "barefoot kids" in Iraq. If you have a spare pair of shoes, in good condition, that your child has outgrown, or you would like to give a new pair, please drop them off at the clinic in Naubinway and Carol will forward them to Iraq. Your gift of a pair of shoes will be greatly appreciated.

Until next time, take care.
