Guided Lake Sturgeon Tour Offered May 12 Near Cheboygan

Aguided tour to learn about lake sturgeon and potentially observe the fish in their spawning habitat will be offered at Black Lake near Cheboygan Friday, May 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. by Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and Sturgeon for Tomorrow. The tour is free of charge.

The lake sturgeon is a threatened species in Michigan and a rare species throughout the United States.

At the tour, experts from the Watershed Council, Department of Natural Resources, Sturgeon for Tomorrow, and other scientists will

be available to talk about lake sturgeon, poaching enforcement, netting and tagging, recent Black Lake watershed research, and restoration work to improve sturgeon habitat. This year's tour offers participants the opportunity to tour a streamside lake sturgeon rearing facility.

The Black River watershed contains the largest self-sustaining population of lake sturgeon in Michigan.
