Hello, everyone. Memorial Day is just around the corner. This holiday seems to be the symbol of the start of the summer season. Typically, this three-day weekend is time for family outings and picnics. Memorial Day is the last Monday in May; it's a time to remember the U.S. men and women who lost their lives serving their country. Previously known as Decoration Day, it was established in 1868 to remember those who died in the Civil War. Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1971. We now know it as a day to remember and honor all U.S. men and women killed or missing in action in all wars, and to remember our loved ones who have passed away. In remembrance, flowers and flags are placed on graves.

My mom, Edna Rushford, had a wonderful visit from her brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Patsy Zenker. They drove from Texas to spend a couple of weeks with her. It has been about five years since they've been here, and all family members enjoyed seeing them again.

Please have a safe and responsible Memorial Day weekend. Don't drink and drive. Plan to get to your destination early. If you're running late, don't drive fast to get there on time, just stop along the way and call ahead to let someone know you're on your way. Your friends and family would rather have you arrive late, than never.

Until next time, take care.
