Straits Area Attractions Voted 'Michigan's Best'

Camping, enjoying attractive scenery, and visiting Mackinac Island were the top three reasons readers of The Detroit News said they travel north in a reader poll of more than 105,000 ballots mailed in to the newspaper in a "Michigan's Best 2006" contest. Suzy's Pasties, Bessie's Pasties, and Manley's Fish Market were among St. Ignace businesses voted at the top of their categories by The Detroit News readers. The Mackinac Bridge was voted the Best Michigan Landmark, and a number of Mackinac Island establishments took top places.

The following Mackinac Island establishments were listed in a special insert of the Wednesday, May 10, issue of The Detroit News:

Mackinac Island took first place as the Best Biking Community in Michigan.

Mackinac Island Marina was voted first place as the Best Marina in Michigan.

Mustang Lounge took first place and Pink Pony Bar and Grill took second place as the Best Place to Kick Back and Shoot the Breeze.

The Pink Pony Bar and Grill took first place and the Mustang Lounge took second place as the Best Place to Experience a Small Midwestern Town's Night Out.

Michigan Point Resort was ranked second place as the Best Workout Spot.

The Mackinac Bridge was first place and Round Island Lighthouse was third place as the Best Michigan Landmark. Second place went to the Pictured Rocks.

Wawashkamo Golf Club was voted second place as the Best Public Golf Course in Michigan.

Cottage Inn was voted first place and Metivier Inn was voted third place as the Best Cozy Bed and Breakfast.

The Key Hole Bar in Mackinaw City took first place for the Best Restaurant to Stop on Your Long Journey North.

Suzy's Pasties in St. Ignace received first place for Best Pasties and Bessie's Homemade Pasties in St. Ignace received third place.

Mackinac Island dominated the Best Fudge Shop category, with JoAnn's Fudge ranking in first, Ryba's Fudge in second, and Murdick's Fudge Kitchen in third.

Manley's Fish Market in St. Ignace took second place for the Best Beef Jerky.

In the Best Ferry to Mackinac Island category, first place went to Arnold Transit Co. Mackinac Island Ferry, second went to Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry, and third place went to Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry.

Round Island Lighthouse took first place and Old Mackinc Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City took third place in the Best Lighthouse category.

The Island took third place as the Best Reason for Going Up North. First place went to camping and second place went to scenery.

Thunder Falls Family Water Park in Mackinaw City took third place for the Best Water Park.

Hotel Iroquois took second place and The Harbor View Dining Room took third place for the Best Restaurant Overall.

Amy Carducci from Horn's Gaslight Bar took third place for the Best Bartender.

Yankee Rebel Tavern receive second place for the Best Hidden Hangout.

Horn's Gaslight Bar took third place for Best Photos on Bar Walls.
