Lauren Izzard, Cory Wellnitz Named Top Senior Athletes

Lauren Izzard and Cory Wellnitz were named Outstanding Senior Athletes at Cedarville High School. Lauren Izzard and Cory Wellnitz were named Outstanding Senior Athletes at Cedarville High School. In what has been described as the greatest athletic year in the history of Cedarville High School, Lauren Izzard and Cory Wellnitz were named Top Senior Athletes during the annual awards banquet Tuesday, May 16.

Every sport including football, cross country, girls basketball, volleyball, and basketball won at least one major trophy during their respective seasons, with girls and boys track and golf season yet to be completed.

Izzard received Most Valuable in volleyball, Defensive Player of the Year in basketball, and the Clarence "Ham" Matson Memorial Award in girls golf while earning Eastern Upper Peninsula All-Conference, The St. Ignace News All-Area, and All-Upper Peninsula honors.

Wellnitz was named Most Valuable Offensive Player in football and Most Valuable Player in basketball while earning All-EUPC, All-Area, and All-Upper Peninsula awards.

Bus Driver Dan Izzard

The first Cedarville Trojans basketball team of 1939 was honored. Members attending were Vernon Nye, Rudy Sherlund, Donald Patrick, and Roy Smith. The Trojans were part of the Mackinac County Basketball League that included St. Ignace, Engadine, Moran, and Cedarville and won the league title during the first season by winning five of six games and in the second season won the conference tournament by defeating St. Ignace and Moran.

Dan Izzard was honored for more 38 years of service to the Les Cheneaux Community School as a bus driver during daily school runs, driving to the Career Center in Sault Ste. Marie, and athletic team bus. The 2006 Trojan Yearbook will be dedicated to Mr. Izzard, who is retiring. He started driving the team bus in 1977, served as Trojans Booster Club president for eight years, was instrumental in getting the weight room built, enlarging the concession stand, and purchasing the signs for the basketball teams in the gymnasium. During road games he kept the scorebook for all his years of driving the Trojans girls and boys basketball teams.

"Dan has been a big part of the all the Trojans teams over the years," said Dave Duncan, boys basketball coach and athletic director. "He took pride in keeping everyone safe and will be missed by all the athletes and coaches."

The Trojan family lost two longtime sport fans with the passing of Don "Digger" Smith and Floyd Stanley. Mr. Smith's wife, Donna Smith, was introduced and presented an autographed basketball from the boys squad.

Baseball: Coach Jim Eberts introduced players from Cedarville who are part of the Pickford/ Cedarville team and presented Most Improved Player to Adam Dingman.

Cross Country: Head Coach Ryan Wilson and Assistant Coach Bruce Thompson and the Trojan squad were named Small Team School of the Year in the Upper Peninsula during the fall season. Rebecca Gregg, Most Valuable Runner for the girls, and Michael Thompson, Most Valuable for the boys, along with Jim Eberts, were recognized as All-Upper Peninsula performers after placing in the top 15 during the U.P. Finals in Houghton.

Girls Basketball: The Trojans were 19-4 on the season and didn't suffer a defeat outside the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference. They won the district championship.

Junior Emily Feldhake was named Most Valuable Player while receiving All-State, All-U.P., AllEUPC, and All-Area honors. Marcie Mason received the Most Improved Player Award. Lauren Izzard received the Defensive Player of the Year Award and earned All-U.P., All-EUPC, and All-Area honors. Donielle Landreville earned the Pete Promo Most Dedicated Player Award along with All-U.P., All-EUPC, and All-Area teams. Lindsay McLeod and Jessie Duncan received All-Area honors.

Football: The Trojans posted an undefeated (9-0) regular season record and completed the year with a 10-1 overall mark under Head Coach Randy Schaedig, who received Class D Coach of the Year honors in the Upper Peninsula.

"Football brought two schools together with Cedarville and DeTour in the co-op program and proved that two communities can join forces and be successful," said Coach Schaedig. "Commitment, hard work, and sacrifices were keys to our success on the gridiron."

Cory Wellnitz, Offensive Player of the Year, and Gary Kott (DeTour), Defensive Player of the Year, received All-State, All-Upper Peninsula, All-EUPC, and All-Area honors. Matt Manley received the Luke Bickham Memorial Award for Dedication and Outstanding Academic Honors while being named to the All-EUPC and AllArea teams.

Players receiving All-U.P., AllEUPC, and All-Area honors were Justin Baker, Peter Treleaven, Aaron Bright, and Alex Smith (DeTour), while Keith Foster, Matt Hansen, and Michael Pollard received All-EUPC and All-Area honors.

Volleyball: Coach Kathy Trevarrow and her Trojans won their 18th consecutive district title and the squad earned All-State Academic honors, with a 3.6 grade point average, from the Michigan Volleyball Coaches Association.

Lauren Izzard, Most Valuable Player, was named to the All-State, All-EUPC, and All-Area teams. Marcie Mason, Defensive Player of the Year, received All-EUPC and All-Area honors. Jill Haske was Most Improved Player along with All-EUPC and All-Area honors. Lindsay McLeod was named to the All-EUPC. Receiving All-Area honors were Donielle Landreville, Hope Deeren, and Carissa Sudol.

Boys Basketball: The Cedarville boys basketball team experienced a standout season with a 24-3 overall record while sharing the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference title. The team won the district and regional crowns while capturing the school's first quarterfinal victory.

Coach Dave Duncan was named Class D Coach of the Year by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters. He presented Cory Wellnitz with the Most Valuable Player Award, All-U.P., All-EUPC and All-Area honors. Nathan Smith and Matt Hansen shared the Most Improved Player Award. Jordan Duncan earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award after receiving All-U.P., All-EUPC, and All-Area honors. Jordan Duncan received the Pete Promo Memorial Most Dedicated Player Award while earning All-U.P., All-EUPC, and All-Area honors.

BCAM Basketball Honors: Coach Tom Wilson in girls basketball and Dave Duncan in boys basketball each received Regional and State Coach of the Year honors in their respective sports by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.

The Lady Trojans basketball squad was ranked ninth as an AllState Academic team, with a grade point average of 3.578.

The Cedarville boys basketball team was ranked number 10 with a 68.5 free throw percentage. Jason Duncan earned a number four ranking at 84.6 percent. Jordan Sweeney earned a number 10 ranking with an 81.5 percentage and the junior guard was named to the Fifth Team All-State by BCAM.

Girls Track: Coach Tom Wilson awarded Most Valuable Performer to Kristen Duman and Most Improved Performer to Emily Winberg.

Boys Track: Coach Ryan Wilson presented Most Valuable Performer to Justin Baker and Most Improved Performer to Jake Wellnitz.

Girls Golf: Coach Sonja Duncan presented Most Valuable Golfer to Jessie Duncan, Most Improved Golfer to Kara Griffin, and the Clarence "Ham" Matson Memorial Award to Lindsay McLeod and Lauren Izzard.

Boys Golf: Coach Dave Duncan presented Most Valuable Golfer to Jordan Duncan, Most Improved Golfer to Michael Pollard, and the Clarence "Ham" Matson Memorial Award to Chad Schlosser.

Many of the golfers are competing in dual sports with track during the spring season.

Seniors Honored: The seniors who won varsity letters were honored including Nick Perkins, Alex Smith, Gary Kott, Lauren Izzard, Marcie Mason, Leah Brant, Casey Long, Jill Haske, Diana Paquin, Donielle Landreville, Marcella Reno, Matt Manley, Nathan Smith, John Abbott, Michael Thompson, Aaron Bright, Ryan Duman, Cory Wellnitz, and Chad Schlosser.
