Pickford Girls, Brimley Boys Capture D-3 Regional Track Crowns

Pickford girls won nine events and Brimley boys swept the four relays en route to the Division 3 regional track and field championships at the Panthers Track Complex Friday, May 19.

Battling strong north winds and temperatures in the 40's, the athletes who placed in the top four in each event qualified for the Upper Peninsula State Finals in Kingsford Saturday, June 3.

Girls Division: The Panthers recorded 72 points, followed by Cedarville with 58.5, Engadine 22, Brimley 18.5, DeTour 4, and Mackinac Island 0.

"It was a good effort by all the girls," said Panthers Coach Sam Lightfoot. "We will need that kind of performance at the U.P. Finals."

Pickford: Caitlin Mortinsen won the 100-meter dash in 13.48, the 200-meter dash in 28.80, and the 400-meter dash in 1:05.35, and placed third in the long jump.

The Panthers 400-meter relay team of Jessie Ledy, Courtney Bruni, Renae Reich, and Veronica Gough won in 55.99. The 800-meter foursome finished first in 1:59.10, the 1600-meter relay took second, and the 3200 relay team placed third.

Jasmine Ledy won the 1600meter run in 5:44.32 and finished second in the 800 and 3200-meter runs. Jessie Ledy won the pole vault with a height of 9'0" and placed second in the long jump. Renae Reich won the high jump with a mark of 4'10" and placed third in the low hurdles. Courtney Bruni won the low hurdles in 52.56.

Katie Jenkins finished second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Veronica Gough was second in the high hurdles. Stephanie Savoie finished third in the pole vault, Amanda Zambron fourth in the shot put, and Veronica Morrison fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Cedarville: The foursome of Lindsay McLeod, Katie Bowlby, Ashley Sweeney, and Lauren Izzard won the 3200-meter relay in 10:55.76. The team of Billie McLeod, Katie Bowlby, Lindsay McLeod, and Lauren Izzard finished first in 4:37.38. The Trojans 400meter relay team took second, and the 800-meter relay placed third.

Billie McLeod finished second in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Emily Feldhake was second in the discus. Marcie Mason placed second in the high jump, and Caitlin Wright second in the low hurdles. Ashley Sweeney placed third in the 3200-meter run, and fourth in the 1600-meter run. Placing fourth were Megan Hill in the high hurdles, Emily Winberg in the 800-meter run, Kara Griffin in the 3200-meter run, and Rebecca Bickham in the pole vault.

Engadine: Elicia Derusha won the 800-meter run in 2:38.95 and was third in the 1600-meter run. Shauni Rutledge won the shot put with a toss of 32'10.5." Shannon Browning came in third in the 100meter dash, Jazmin Rodriguez third in the discus and shot put, and Lauren MacArthur fourth in the long jump. The Eagles 3200-meter relay team placed second, the 1600meter relay took third, and the 800meter relay finished fourth.

Brimley: Katey Kingsbury finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 800-meter run. Miranda Rousseau placed second in the pole vault. Molly McIntyre was second in the high jump. Rachel Carruthers was third in the 200meter dash and fourth in the 100meter dash. The Bays 800-meter relay placed second and the 400meter relay took fourth.

DeTour: Christina Stocking finished third in the high hurdles. Anne Goetz placed fourth in the 400meter dash. Amber Burton finished fourth in the high jump. The Raiders 400-meter relay took third and in the 1600-meter relay placed fourth.

Boys Division: Brimley tallied 56 points, followed by Pickford 46, Engadine 36, Cedarville 32, Mackinac Island 3, and DeTour 2.

Brimley: The Bays four relays raced to victory as the 400-meter relay won in 48.77, the 800-meter relay in 1:39.48, the 1600-meter relay in 3:55.48, and the 3200-meter relay in 9:17.20.

Jerrod Dillon won the 100-meter dash in 11.37 and the 200-meter dash in 24.47. Jordon Dillon placed second in the high hurdles and third in the low hurdles. Ryan Freedman was second in the 100-meter dash, Harlan Chartrand second in the 400meter dash, and Chris York second in the 800-meter run. Derek Parish finished second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Travis Lynn was third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Ben Jacobs was fourth in the high jump, and Jeff Graham fourth in the long jump.

Pickford: Triple winner Richard Gibson led the Panthers with victories in the 800-meter run in 2:15.74, the 1600-meter run in 5:03.95, and the 3200-meter run in 11:26.05.

Kip Cline won the long jump with a leap of 17'9," finished second in the high jump, third in the high hurdles, and fourth in the low hurdles. Scott Coullard won the 400meter dash in 55.31 and placed second in the 200-meter dash. Kurt Harrison won the pole vault with a height of 11'6." Toby Kibble placed third in the pole vault. Nic Raden was third in the 3200-meter run. Joe Jenkins placed fourth in the shot put. The Panthers 1600-meter relay took second. The 800 and 3200-meter relay placed third, and the 400meter relay finished fourth.

Engadine: Grayson Hood and J.J. Troyer were double winners to lead the Eagles, as Hood won the high hurdles in 16.26 and the low hurdles in 44.44 and Troyer won the discus with a throw of 126'3" and the shot put with a toss of 44'8.5".

Stefen Albright won the long jump with a leap of 17'9." Scott Butkovich placed second in the discus. Brad Visser finished fourth in the pole vault, Jacob Swider fourth in the 400-meter dash, and Paul Converse fourth in the 100-meter dash. The Eagles 400 and 800-meter relay teams took second, and the 1600 and 3200-meter relay squads placed fourth.

Cedarville: Ryan Duman won the high jump with a mark of 6'0." Justin Baker was second in the low hurdles, third in the long jump, and fourth in the high hurdles. Sheldon Tassier finished second in the 1600meter run and fourth in the 3200meter run. Chad Schlosser placed second in the 3200-meter run and fourth in the 1600-meter run, and Kevin Thompson second in the pole vault.

The Trojans 3200-meter relay team placed second, the 400 and 1600-meter relay foursomes took third, and the 800-meter relay squad finished fourth. Cory Wellnitz was third in the shot put, Jason Duncan third in the 800-meter run, and Peter Treleaven third in the 400-meter dash. Jordan Sweeney finished fourth in the 800-meter run.

Mackinac Island: Woody Beardsley finished third in the discus and Robert Chambers placed fourth in the 200-meter dash for the Lakers.

DeTour: Stan Stocking finished third in the 1600-meter run.
