St. Ignace Boys 1st, Girls 2nd in Division 2 Region Track Meet

The St. Ignace Boys Track Team won the Division 2 Regionals at Newberry Friday, May 19. The St. Ignace Saints' success continues on the oval track, as the boys won seven events and swept the 400-meter dash race to capture the championship and the girls finished second during the Division 2 regionals at Newberry, Friday, May 19.

Newberry and Stephenson hosted Division 2 regionals. Athletes and relay teams finishing in the top four qualify for the Upper Peninsula State Finals in Kingsford Saturday, June 3.

Boys Division Scoring: The Saints tallied 59 points, followed by the host Indians with 49, Munising 37, Manistique 24, Rudyard 13, and Gwinn 5.

"We had a good effort from everyone," said Saints Coach Dave Brines. "We trailed 33-21 before Davis, Pierson, Marshall, and Smock went 1-2-3-4 in the 400meter dash to give us a big lift."

"Pete Everson has been helping with the pole vaulters and Ed Lester has been working with the relay handoffs, and that has helped the entire team."

Girls Division Scoring: Gwinn won the regional title with 49 points, followed by St. Ignace and Newberry with 38 points, Manistique 34, Rudyard 15, and Munising 13.

St. Ignace Boys: Senior Paul Davis won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.46 and 400-meter dash in 53.99 and finished second in the 100-meter dash. Derrick Clark won the pole vault with a height of 11'0" and the high hurdles in 17.31 and placed third in the low hurdles, and Anthony Lester won the high jump with a mark of 5'8."

The Saints 800-meter relay team of Jesse Becker, Zach Pierson, Derrick Clark, and Paul Davis finished first in 1:36.10. The 1600meter relay foursome of Nick Montie, Derek Marshall, Mario Calcaterra, and Zach Pierson placed first in 3:45.16. The 400-meter relay group of Kyle Smock, Ben Matelski, Anthony Lester, and Jesse Becker took second, and the 3200meter relay team of Kody King, Nick Montie, Mario Calcaterra, and Derek Marshall finished fourth.

Mario Calcaterra placed second in the low hurdles and long jump. Zach Pierson was second in the 400meter dash, Derek Marshall third in the 400-meter dash, and Jesse Becker fourth in the 100 and 200meter dashes. Kyle Smock placed fourth in the 400-meter dash, and James Sayles fourth in the shot put.

St. Ignace Girls: Kelsey Cryderman won the 400 meter dash in 1:02.72 and was second in the 200meter dash. Jaimee Bloxsom won the pole vault with a height of 8'0."

The foursome of Stacee Schnicke, Caysey Brown, Ashley St. Louis, and Kelsey Cryderman won the 400-meter relay in 54.70 and the 800-meter relay in 1:53.45. The team of Amanda Coveyou, Caysey Brown, Stacee Schnicke, and Ashley St. Louis finished second in the 1600-meter relay. The 3200-meter relay group of Chelcee Tiernan, Page Paul, Jodie Langstaff, and Amanda Coveyou took third.

Amanda Coveyou placed second in the high jump and fourth in the 400-meter dash. Stacee Schnicke was second in the low hurdles, Kayla Gustin third in the high hurdles, and Ashley St. Louis fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Rudyard Boys: Travis Clegg finished second in the shot put. Travis Siegwart came in second in the pole vault. Mike Chantos was third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and third in the high jump. The Bulldogs took fourth in the 400-meter relay.

Rudyard Girls: Brittany Hoolesma won the 3200-meter run in 13:28.11 and finished third in the 1600-meter run. Aimee Doyle was third in the 3200-meter run and fourth in the 1600-meter run. Allyson Markstrom was third in the high jump and fourth in the 200meter dash. Courtney Fowler placed third in the long jump, and Alisha Thompson fourth in the pole vault.

LaSalle High School To Host SAC Meet; Honor 1956 Track

Team Members

LaSalle High School will host the Straits Area Conference Track and Field championships Thursday, May 25, at the Kiwanis Track Complex. Before the event starts, the Saints track program will honor members of the first team from 1956.

Members from the inaugural team expected to attend are Joe Frazier, Terry Smith, Frankie Rogers, Pete Spieles, Gil Ziegler, Calvin Prout, Dwayne Sorenson, and Ron Walker.

The former Saints track stars will be introduced at 3:30 p.m. and presented with a gift from the St. Ignace athletic program.

Meet of Champions

Canceled for 2006

The Meet of Champions scheduled for the St. Ignace Kiwanis Track Complex Tuesday, May 30, has been canceled for the 2006 season, but will return in 2007.
