Saints Fall to Hornets in District Baseball Finals

St. Ignace defeated Mackinaw City 5-4 in the Division 4 district semifinals, but the defending champions lost to Pellston 8-6 in the championship game Friday, June 2, at the St. Ignace Kiwanis Complex.

A trio of seniors led the Saints over the Comets. Kyle O'Boyle recorded two hits that included one home run and scored two runs and Tyler Huskey and Zach Schroeder added two hits and scored one run each.

Dan Olsen chipped in two hits, Kyle Spencer tallied one hit and scored one run, and James Peterson notched one hit as the St. Ignace bats registered 10 hits.

St. Ignace scored three runs in the first inning. Mackinaw City answered with two in the first and the Comets tied the game at 3-3 with one run in the fourth inning. The Saints scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held Mackinaw City to just a single run in the sixth inning to post the win.

St. Ignace led 5-4 after the third inning against Pellston in the championship game, but couldn't hang on as the Hornets scored four runs in the fourth to seal the win.

Tyler Huskey's play was outstanding in his final game, with three hits and two runs. Zach Schroeder added two hits and scored one run, Jeffrey Gamble notched two hits, Dan Olsen and Lewie Mullins chipped in one hit and scored one run, Shawn Cowell tallied one hit, and James Peterson scored one run.

"The seniors, Tyler, Kyle, and Zach, played well in their final two games, but mistakes hurt us down the stretch," said Saints Coach Lou Grondin.

St. Ignace softball team ended the season with an 8-2 setback at the hands of Pellston during the district tournaments Tuesday, May 30.

Twinbill of Regular Season

The Saints swept the regular season doubleheader from Rudyard 176 and 6-3 Monday, May 22.

St. Ignace scored one run in the first inning, six in the second, and five in the third and fifth innings to post the Straits Area Conference win.

Marcie Rickley ignited the offense with three hits that included a homerun and triple, scored three runs, and two RBI's. Sam Wyers, the winning pitcher, added three hits, one run, and two RBI's. Krista LaVake added two hits, scored two runs, and two RBI's. Laura Rickley notched two hits, scored two runs, and one RBI. Jenny Massaway tallied one hit (triple), scored one run, and two RBI's. Tabitha Wright charted one hit and scored two runs. Misti Gamble counted one hit, one run, and one RBI, Cally Klimczak scored two runs, and Alyssa Pechta scored one run.

During the nightcap, the Saints trailed 3-2 after the third inning before scoring one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Jamie Krug, the winning pitcher, notched one hit and scored two runs. Marcie Rickley added one hit, one run, and one RBI. Jenny Massaway, Laurie Rickley, and Misti Gamble scored one run each, Emily Sposito tallied one hit, and Tabitha Wright chipped in one RBI.
