Cedarville To Host U.P. All-Star Hoops Classic

Two coaches and seven players will represent the Eastern Upper Peninsula in the 21st Annual Upper Peninsula All-Star Basketball Classic that will be held for the first time east of Manistique Saturday, June 10, at the John Duncan Gymnasium in Cedarville.

Coaches Dave Duncan of Cedarville and Bill Schomberg of Sault High will take part, along with players Cory Wellnitz of Cedarville, Matt Romatz of Pickford, Travis Lynn of Brimley, Garrett Becker of St. Ignace, Trent Salo and Dana VanSloten of Rudyard, and Pia Hoge of DeTour.

Duncan, Class D Coach of the Year, along with Ben Leiker of Norway will head the boys South Team that includes Carl Branstrom of Mid Peninsula, Patick O'Connell of Escanaba, Justin Bloniarz of Bark River-Harris, Andrew Frazer of North Central, Jordan Phillippo of Stephenson, Joe Pontbrland of Norway, Josh Theobald of Iron Mountain, Wellnitz, Romatz, Lynn, Becker, and Salo.

Schomberg, rookie coach at Sault High, and Pete Lewinski of Ironwood will lead the boys North Team that includes Craig Koski of Baraga, Michael Pawlak and Max Pertile of Ironwood, Roy Miller of Calumet, Dustin Brancheau of Ishpeming, Thore Tredeau of Marquette, Alex Fleck of Munising, Tony Jandron of Negaunee, and George Peteron IV and Kyle Robinson of Watersmeet.

Coaches Jon Miller and Sharon Ducat of Iron Mountain will head the girls South Team that includes Shelle Rochon of North Central, Ashley Folcik of Carney-Nadeau, Angie Leckson of Big Bay de Noc, Sarah Lepisto of Mid Peninsula, Jaime VanEnkevort of Bark RiverHarris, K.C. Blahnik of Gladstone, Jenn Forvilly of Escanaba, Maureen Burke of Crystal FallsForest Park, Hoge, and VanSloten.

The North Team, coached by Keith Willis of Calumet, will be led by Angela Guisfredi of Lake Linden-Hubbell, Kasey Willis of Calumet, Lindsey Hamm and Monica Massuci of Ontonagon, Jayme Hamilton and Alyssa Ringsmuth of WakefieldMarenisco, Ally Ticknell of Negaunee, Nicole Grengs of Marquette, and Jill Tollefson of L'Anse.

The U.P. State Credit Union and Soo Co-op Credit Union are sponsoring a cruise aboard Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry Friday, June 9, from the North Dock in downtown St. Ignace.

Brunch will served Saturday, June 10, at the high school before the skill contests, free throw shooting, three-point shooting, and slam dunk begin at 11 a.m. and girls game will tip off at 1 p.m. The boys will follow at 3 p.m.

The all-star classic has been hosted by Northern Michigan University, Gwinn, Crystal FallsForest Park, Iron Mountain, Gladstone, and Manistique.
