Les Cheneaux
The weather is something we won't talk about today because there is a lot going on in the community inspite of it.
There has certainly been an influx of summer residents this past week. It's nice to see so many familiar and smiling faces in the grocery and at the post office.
Marty Feldhake, who has played his guitar and sang his songs for many local occasions, art fairs, the library, museum, and many times in our church, has just put out a CD entitled "Old Quarry Road." The first song on this CD is the title "Old Quarry Road" and it was especially nice to learn from Marty that a story that I wrote for The St. Ignace News/Weekly Wave, a few years ago was the inspiration for this song. There are nine songs on the CD and it is for sale at Safe Harbor Books for those who may be interested.
I received an e-mail with the information that there will be a Venetian Boat Parade Saturday, July 1, (rain day, Sunday, July 2) from the Hessel Marina. The boats will be cruising through the Snows Channel, out to Government Bay, the north side of Coryell Island to Boot, then along Lakeside and returning to Hessel. All boats will be welcome to join along this route. It sounds as though this could be an interesting event for all.
Decorate your boat any way you like, with lights, ribbons, bells and whistles. There will be a people's choice vote for the best decorated boat, best lighted boat dock, best lighted boat house, best participant's costume, and so it's a time to really use your imagination. To vote, call Joe Eger at (906) 484-2511 and leave a message. All votes must be cast before July 5. Winners will be announced in the Weekly Wave.
July 4 plans are also being made with a parade, games, and fireworks. Watch this newspaper for details.
The summer moves along quickly, so please don't forget to make reservations for any classes one may wish to take through the Arts Council this summer. The first class will be a watercolor workshop for intermediate and advanced artists with Betsy Bohmer on July 26, 27, and 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Fee for members is $50, for non-members $70.
Peggy Patrick's workshops for Young People's Art, ages 10 through high school, will begin July 5 and will take place every Wednesday and Friday in July. The cost for this class is $6 per session or $12 a week. Supplies are furnished. Call Judy Mock to register for classes at (906) 484-3408, or pick up a form at the Les Cheneaux Library.
Our young people who are in the Cedarville High School Band are enjoying their trip to China and are due home next week, with many stories to tell, I'm sure. It will be wonderful to hear all about it.
This week, Bruce has given me a story about him and his wife, Betty, on a hunting expedition many years ago. His story follows:
"This is about Betty and me going deer hunting. It was before we got married. She was up here for a visit, so we went across to Marquette Island and walked over to Liberty's farm and went on about a mile to a good runway. We sat on this runway, waiting for a deer to come by. Well, we sat till near dark, then had to walk back across the trail to the shore line across from our place. Betty got tired and I had to carry her gun. She had a 16 gauge pump shotgun.
"Well, we did not go deer hunting anymore, but she hunted duck quite a lot. I would put decoys off of our gas pump dock and when she would come home from teaching school, she would go down to the office, which was on the end of our dock, make a pot of coffee, and sit, waiting for a duck to come by and maybe light in her decoys. She got many bluebills off this dock set-up.
"After a while Clark O'Brien, the local game warden, got wind of her duck hunting off the dock. He would come down and sit with her and drink coffee too. Clark was living just a few yards up from our driveway. So it went. I sometimes joined them. We used to get good duck shooting off our dock late in the fall, and the coffee pot was always on.
"There is a good growth of wild celery off our dock, which is good food for deep-diving ducks. I do not hunt anymore, so those late fall bluebills and red head ducks eat unmolested."
We wish all fathers a happy Father's Day next Sunday.
