DeTour Area
The weather last weekend, even though cool temperatures prevailed, was most cooperative, with sunny blue skies. What a joy to be able to enjoy all summer activities.
We welcomed all those who were in town for the Blessing of the Bikes. It was great to see all the beautiful Harley-Davidsons arrive for the festivities. In speaking with a few of the visitors from Canada and downstate, they were happy to return to DeTour as everyone is so friendly. We hope this rally will become a yearly event.
This Wednesday, June 14, is bingo night at the Village Hall sponsored by the DeTour Homemakers. The proceeds from this bingo game are always donated to a worthy cause.
Tuesday, June 20, is the date of the Community Choir concert to be performed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7 p.m. This year's concert is directed by Barb Taylor and accompanied by Jean Bloom. The group has been rehearsing for many weeks to bring you enjoyable music. There is no admission price, but donations are welcome. This concert is sponsored by the EUP Fine Arts Council.
We also welcome the re-opening of the Bed and Breakfast on Huron Street. The new owners are Dave and Susie Rhinard. The place has a new look.
Thanks to the DeTour Homemakers for planting colorful flowers in the planters along Ontario Street. The flowers make our Village streets appear more summer-like. The DeTour Homemakers plant flowers every year.
Plans are being made once again for a fun time for the fourth of July. One event is the Second Annual DeTour Village 5K Run/Walk to be held Monday, July 3. This walk is sponsored by Bonnie Hughes at bhughes@charter.net. The race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Pavilion. The entry fee is $10. This walk was a success last year and proved to be a lot of fun as well.
Looking ahead to July, there will be a band performance every Saturday evening at the DeTour Harbour. This was such a success last year that Bruce Glupker and Gary Dudek decided to bring back the bands. There is no fee to attend. All you have to do is bring your cooler, your folding chair, and sit back and relax. Concerts begin July 15, and end August 5. The band is paid from the proceeds of the marina.
The Botanical Gardens are looking beautiful, thanks to those who have been meeting there for work bees. There is a new time schedule for working, every Thursday at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The home and Garden Walk will take place Saturday, July 22. Lunch will be served in the gardens of the Wytiaz home on Ontario Street. Times are at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. More information will follow.
A thought: Life is too short to stuff a cherry tomato.
