Antiques on the Bay
Enrique and Susan Medellin from Lapeer will bring their prizewinning 1965 Corvette. More than 100 cars from the 1930s and 1940s will be featured at Antiques on the Bay in St. Ignace Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17. The show, for 1981-and-older original vehicles only, will display cars at the St. Ignace Marina. Admission is free.
Registered participants will cross the Mackinac Bridge from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace in a Friday afternoon rally to begin the show.
"These are cars from the '40s, which means a lot of Cadillacs and Lincolns, the big stuff that people just don't see around much anymore," said organizer Ed Reavie of Nostalgia Productions. "These cars are not modified in any way and are subject to really tight judging at the show. There will be a lot of deliberation about which car is the most authentic on the show field, and sometimes it may come down to the quality of a headlight lens that gives one car the winning edge over a competitor."
The show's grand prize is a two-night stay at Grand Hotel. Awards will be given in several categories Saturday evening.
Peter Kortenhorn of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, owns this beautiful 1948 Buick Roadmaster. About 110 to 130 antique cars are expected this year, Mr. Reavie said. Spectators can expect to see many unusual models at the show, including Hudson, Kaiser, Packard, DeSoto, Auburn, Essex, International Harvester, Dodge LeFemme, and Jeepster.
"That number of cars fills up the marina dock really nicely," he said. "The St. Ignace Marina is a gorgeous backdrop for this event. A lot of those cars have had photographs taken at our marina for publication in car magazines."
The show will include all kinds of original antique cars, including a couple of nostalgia drag racers from the 50s and 60s.
"These are prime, prime cars, a good crowd, and we always have a lot of fun at Antiques on the Bay," Mr. Reavie said.
The weekend's weather will determine the size of the crowd, he said.
Antiques on the Bay will be followed the next weekend by the 31st annual St. Ignace Car Show, June 22 through June 24, which features hundreds of antique, classic, and modified custom cars. That show, which is also free of charge, features a Thursday evening Kewadin Cruise Night and a Friday evening parade of cars. Vehicles will be displayed on State Street Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"You'd be surprised how many people collect both antique and modified cars - one of each," Mr. Reavie said. "The next weekend, they'll park the antique and bring the hot rod."
Antiques on the Bay is the first in the 2006 series of car shows by Nostalgia Productions of St. Ignace, and is sponsored by the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau, Kewadin Casinos, First National Bank, Hagerty Insurance, and Mackinac Sales.
