The Engadine Methodist Church is holding its fourth free meal Wednesday, August 30, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the church. The meal will be an indoor picnic featuring sweet corn, hamburgers, and hot dogs. There also will be a game night for the children. Everyone in the community is welcome to come and join in the festivities.
Entries are now being taken for the 2006 Baby Photo Contest. Parents and legal guardians are the only persons who are allowed to enter their own children in the contest, to be held Thursday, August 24, at 6 p.m.
The search is on for the 2006 Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. To nominate someone you must say, in 100 words or less, why the person you choose should receive the award. The Seventh Annual Naubinway Engadine Merchants Association's "Fall Festival" will be held Saturday, September 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Naubinway Pavilion. There will be arts and crafts, food booths, and children's games and activities. Tables are available at

Sunday, August 20, is the return of the Cooks Annual Corn Roast and raffle at the Inwood Township Fire Hall in Cooks from noon to 11 p.m. Everyone is welcome. There will be door prizes, drawings, raffles, and food. There also will be dancing to the live music of the Bear Walkers from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. They will be serving all the corn you can eat for $3; children younger than 5 can eat free of charge. There will be a chicken barbecue. An auction will be starting at 1 p.m. with hundreds of items up for bid.
"Chasin' Steel" will perform Thursday, August 24, at the Manistique Bandshell starting at 7 p.m. They will feature bluegrass music.

The Alzheimer's Association is gearing up for Memory Walk 2006. Forty Memory Walks have been planned in Michigan to help raise funds for research and chapter programs. The 2006 Tahquamenon Area "Walk for Diabetes" will be held Saturday, September 16, with registration from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The walk will be at 10 a.m. You're invited to come and have fun while helping to raise awareness and funds for diabetes education.
The funding will help support the diabetic awareness in our local communities, glucometer strips, diabetis grants, and the Foot Care Clinic. The course will wind through beautiful downtown Newberry, residential areas, and the outskirts of the village. Your participation will be much appreciated. Congratulations to Nanette Biang of Naubinway on the birth of her grandson, David Michael Edward Beckman, Friday, July 21. David is the son of David C. Beckman and Jean Maudrie. Maternal grandparents are Lila McPhee (nee Alexander) and the late Paul Maudrie.
The Luce County Historical Society will meet Monday, August 21, at 10 a.m. at the Historical Museum. Members will continue to identify old photographs, hear from an early resident about Newberry in days gone by, and review progress on the building's restoration.
We're glad to hear that Jackie Yale is home and doing well after spending time in Marquette having tests to check for a heart attack. We understand that her progress is moving along very well, and we wish her many get well wishes from her friends and family.
