Emergency Services, Library, Road Requests Find Approval
Portage Township residents supported millages for emergency services, the Curtis Library, and road improvements in the primary.
A one-mill renewal for fire and ambulance services was passed, 149 to 38, and will generate $61,617 a year for two years, to be split equally between each department. The money will be used only for vehicle replacement, said Marcia McDonald, township clerk.
A half-mill renewal to support the Curtis Library for four years was passed, 132 to 56, and will generate about $38,800 the first year. The township pays $22,000 annually to Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie, the regional consortium which operates the Curtis facility. The remaining funds will be used to pay utility bills, which ran $4,600 last year, and for any other needs.
Upgrades to roads which sometimes are inaccessible during the spring thaw will be improved with a one-mill road millage, approved by voters 133 to 55 for two years. The mud can make the impassable for school busses and mail trucks.
Crisler Shores Road will receive gravel and drainage work, North Gould City Road will be improved from McConnell Road to Sandtown Road, and Ketola Road will be improved. McGahan Road has been labeled a safety problem by the Michigan Department of Transportation, which will contribute funds to the township to bring up the grade where the road meets H-42. Shallow hills in the area make it impossible for drivers to see oncoming traffic, Mrs. McDonald said.
There are 723 registered voters in the township.
