Betty Ann Brown

Betty Ann Brown, 69, was a homemaker and an employee at the Tahquamenon Area Schools from 1971 to 1979, where she worked as an aide under the Title IV American Indian Education program. She provided academic support for Native American students as well as counseling and family services.

Mrs. Brown died Friday evening, August 11, 2006, surrounded by her family. She was under the care of North Woods Hospice.

She was born in Detroit September 20, 1936, to George and Elizabeth (nee DeSilva) Justice.

She was graduated from Redford Township High School in 1954. She married Ron Brown May 14, 1955, and moved to Newberry in 1956. For the past 17 years, Mr. and Mrs. Brown have spent their winters in Tucson, Arizona.

Over the years, Mrs. Brown's hobbies included crocheting, stained glass projects, oil painting,

bead work, hiking, board games, crossword puzzles, berry picking, swimming, playing bridge in many clubs, and casino gaming.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry and volunteered her talents as a seamstress for community musical theater and ice shows in the 1970s. She also chaired the local 4-H sewing club. She and her husband served as foster parents in the 1960s and 1970s.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years; five children and their families, Cherie and Dewey Wilder of Garnet, Charlotte Mikuska of St. Ignace, Carolyn Brown of Lake Linden, Clifford and Loretta Brown of Little Lake, and Curt Brown of Newberry; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 17, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with Pastor Nancy Barkat officiating.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
