It's hard to believe, but we're already making plans for kids starting school. The weather will be getting cooler, and our lives will change into gear for cooler weather. This summer was really a hot one, and the thought of cooler weather sounds nice now.

The MSU Extension in Schoolcraft County is gearing up for a garage sale Wednesday, August 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursday, August 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Schoolcraft County Fair Building. Call (906) 341-3688 and ask for Michelle Galla, or (906) 341-3424 and ask for Dee, for drop-off times. They're asking for donations of quality items only, no clothes. All proceeds will benefit the 4-H Programs of Schoolcraft County.

Don't forget the 2006 "Fall Annual Art In the Barn" oil and acrylic exposition to be held Friday, September 1, through Monday, September 4, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 8135 Miller Road in Newberry. For more information, call (906) 293-3929.

This display will feature original work by local artists, and there will be more than 100 paintings to choose from.

Bingo will be held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Manistique VFW Hall. Proceeds help support Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Bay Area. They also play Monday nights at 6:30 p.m.

Nahma Township is holding a Labor Day celebration Sunday, September 3, with a rain date of Monday, September 4, at the Nahma Township Hall. There will be a parade starting at 11 a.m., with first, second, and third place prizes. There will be a pie-eating contest at 3 p.m. and dancing to the live music of the "Generations" from noon to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There also will be craft tables, children's games, fish fry, hamburgers, brats, taco salad, French fries, ice cream, and a raffle for a 2005 four-wheeler. Don't forget, Vacation Bible School "Club Can Do" will be running through Friday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Engadine Methodist Church.

There is bingo every Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Newberry.

Saturday, September 23, the American Legion in Newberry will host the Fiddlers Jamboree. This event usually starts at noon and runs until about 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. They break for dinner and return later in the evening for square dancing. It's a fun-filled day.
