Windows have been replaced that were destroyed by vandals August 14 and 15. Replacing the windows will cost between $8,000 and $10,000. Taillights and mirrors were also destroyed. Seventeen-year-old Ridge Rooney of St. Ignace was arrested Monday, August 21, for vandalism last week at LaSalle High School. He was charged with two counts of malicious destruction of a school bus, charges which carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Mr.
Rooney was arraigned Tuesday, August 22, in the 92nd District Court. The second subject is a 16year-old St. Ignace youth who is being charged with one count of School Bus-Intentional Damage and will be processed through the juvenile court system. The Circuit Court Family Division stated that the person's name is being withheld because the subject is a minor. It may be released when the case has been processed
Vandals caused $12,000 to $15,000 in damage to four school buses parked in the St. Ignace Area Schools parking lot on the nights of Monday, August 14, and Tuesday, August 15. In addition, a rock was thrown through a high school cafeteria window and a security light was damaged.
Tuesday morning, two buses were found with windows smashed and tail lights broken, said Superintendent Mike Springsteen. They were among four buses parked together. At 4 a.m. Wednesday, a neighbor reported that two more buses had been similarly damaged.
"This is very unusual," Mr. Springsteen said before the arrest. "We usually don't have much vandalism, and this is a lot of vandalism. I'm not sure why, but since it happened two nights in a row, I suspect someone was mad at the school."
The Mackinac County Sheriff's Department identified the two suspects in the incident. Mr. Rooney was lodged at Mackinac County Jail and has been released on hi s own recognizance under house arrest.
