Kayakers Enjoy Blissful Day at Sand Bay

More than 100 kayakers from five states attended on-the-water classes in Lake Michigan on Sand Bay over the weekend. The Women's Kayak Symposium, which drew women from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan, offered classes for beginners and included instruction for those with more than 20 years of experience. "It's like being in the wilderness teaching, and staying in a hotel," said Lori Stegmier (front), one of the course teachers from Grand Rapids. Friday's weather of low winds and few waves offered perfect conditions for instruction, said event organizer Bill Thompson of Down Wind Sports in Marquette. In its third year, this is the first time the traveling symposium was held in St. Ignace.
