EUPC, WC To Begin Inaugural Season as Mid-Eastern League
Cedarville coaching staff (from left) assistant coaches Dennis Polk, Duncan Martin, Scott Barr, and head coach Randy Schaedig. A project two years in the making will become a reality as the football teams from the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC), one of the oldest leagues in the Upper Peninsula, will join forces with the Wolverine Conference (WC) to form the new Mid-Eastern Football Conference (MEFC) to begin play in the fall of 2006.
The athletic directors from Cedarville, Pickford, Engadine, and Brimley in the EUPC and North Dickinson, Powers-North Central, Rapid River, Bark River-Harris, and Mid Peninsula of the WC finalized the decision and announced the introduction of the MEFC Tuesday, September 20, 2005.
Teams are already familiar with each other, with the previous non-conference schedule and the cross over games that were played on the ninth date. With the new league, athletic directors will have to fill just one or two non-conference games instead of two or three.
"From the scheduling standpoint, it is much easier with one non-league game," said Dave Duncan, athletic director at Cedarville High School. "We played four games with the WC in 2005 and this season we needed just one non-league game."
The new league is just for varsity football, with the remaining sports staying in the EUPC.
