Historian Seeking Old Nicknames
Ron Pesch, the Michigan High School Athletic Association historian, is seeking nicknames from past high schools in the Upper Peninsula.
These high schools were once proud schools with their own identities during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s before consolidation took place and communities joined forces.
Readers may remember the Alpha Mastodons, Amasa Hemities, Bergland Vikings, Champion Indians, Channing Railroaders, Cooks Clippers, Doelle Spartans, Garden Jets, Hermansville Redskins, Nahma Redarrows, Mass Rockets, National Mine Miners, Perkins Yellowjackets, Powers Spaulding Tigers, Rockland Blackhawks, Trenary Comets, and Trout Creek Anglers.
Mr. Pesch is seeking nicknames for Hulbert, Daggett, Quinnesac, Ripley, Michigamme, Flech, Palmer, and Pequaming to add to the list of school teams above that are gone, but not forgotten.
Those who have information about the nicknames are asked to contact The St. Ignace News by fax at (906) 643-9122 or e-mailing at ads@stignacenews.com, attention David Latva.
