Defending EUPC Champions Cedarville Gear Toward New League
Cedarville Trojans Varsity Football team includes Head Coach Randy Schaedig, Assistant Coaches Scott Barr, Duncan Martin, and Dennis Polk, and players Justin Baker-34, Jordan Sweeney-11, Peter Treleaven-22, Matt Hansen-24, Joe Currie73, Jimmy Eberts-55, Michael Pollard-62, Kevin Leach-77, Keith Foster-78, Ryan Pollard-76, Jake Wellnitz-32, Jordan Duncan-18, Sheldon Tassier-52, Jason Duncan-88, Micah Lindberg-66, and Paul Eberts-61. Cedarville posted the perfect regular season in 2005 after registering a 9-0 mark and the Trojans won the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) for the final time as a football league and qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs.
The Trojans, along with Engadine, Pickford, and Brimley, will join the new league, Mid-Eastern Football Conference (MEFC) with North Dickinson, North Central, Rapid River, Bark River-Harris, and Mid Peninsula to form a strong gridiron league. The question on the minds
of Cedarville fans and Eastern Upper Peninsula fans is, "will the Trojans repeat the effort in 2006?"
Veteran coach Randy Schaedig will build his squad with 10 returnees from the championship year, including three seniors entering their third varsity season.
Senior Justin Baker will play halfback and safety. He rushed for 1,069 yards and scored 14 touchdowns during the regular season and caught five passes for 67 yards and recorded 40 tackles and six interceptions to lead the Trojans.
Joe Currie, the top lineman, will anchor the Cedarville
front four. He registered 47 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Michael Pollard, at halftime and corner, will return for his third varsity campaign.
Senior quarterback Peter Treleaven returns for his final season after completing 37 of 79 passes for 633 yards. He notched seven touchdowns, rushed for 221 yards, and posted a 35.6 average with his punting.
Seniors Keith Foster, at center and defensive line, tallied 53 tackles, Matt Hansen, at offensive line and linebacker, marked 46 tackles, Jordan Sweeney, at end, quarterback, and safety, notched 30 tackles and three interceptions,
and Jimmy Eberts, at flanker, had five receptions for 56 yards and 21 tackles. Kevin Leach will be on the offensive and defensive line.
First-year varsity players are juniors Jordan Duncan, Jason Duncan, Jake Wellnitz, Ryan Pollard, Sheldon Tassier, Micah Lindberg, and sophomore Paul Eberts.
"We have a strong senior class that will be the heart and soul of this team and the key to our success for the season," said Coach Schaedig. "I'm excited about the new conference. We played most of the teams from the Wolverine Conference, but this season they will be league games."
The Trojans only non-conference game will be Posen and the remaining schedule will be opponents from the MEFC. CEDARVILLE TROJANS Varsity Football Schedule
