DeTour Area
It might be close to summer's end, but the "beat" goes on. The second annual Summer's End Concert, to be held at the DeTour Union Presbyterian Church, will feature The Collecting Consort of Lakeview. The husband and wife musical team is Anne and Gary Wakenhut. Their daughter, Jennifer Hetzman-Holmes, will join the team as the narrator. Mrs. Wakenhut plays the Celtic harp and Mr. Wakenhut plays the hammered dulcimer, whistles, wood, silver, and pan flutes as well as the clarinet.
The Wakenhuts will be performing one of their most popular shows called "Michigan Heritage." The show is about 90 minutes long. Admission is free, but a donation basket will be set up to benefit the Fine Arts Council. This concert will be Sunday, September 3, at 3 p.m. at the Union Church on Ontario Street in DeTour.
Coming up Saturday, September 2, is the Sixth Annual Bob-O-Classic on Drummond Island at "The Rock." The fee is $65 per person for a two-man scramble of 18 holes. There will be prizes and other specials. If you're not a golfer, you may sponsor a hole for $50. All proceeds go to the Bobby Glasser Memorial Scholarship Fund at DeTour High School.
In May, 2006, three scholarships were presented to graduating seniors in the amount of $4,500. For more information, call Linda or Alex Fisher at (906) 297-2101.
Nancy Mordecai, who planned and chaired the first DeTour Village Fine Art Festival, is still receiving kudos and praise for the event, which took place in the Village Saturday, August 19. Nancy was more than pleased with the turnout of the fine artists, with
a total of 35 participating. The artists were pleased with the sale of their artworks.
