Police Reports
The following are reports from the St. Ignace Police Department from August 14 to August 28:
Twenty-eight boxes of needles and syringes from Mackinac Straits Veterinary Clinic were stolen during a break-in on the evening of Monday, August 21, or early morning Tuesday, August 22. An employee told police the rear door of the building was broken when she opened the facility at 7:45 a.m. She found several needles lying on the floor. The case remains open and police have no suspects.
A 21-year-old St. Ignace man was arrested for attempting to break into the Museum of Ojibwa Culture on North State Street early Saturday morning, August 26. Police apprehended the man after a witness called 9-1-1 when he spotting a man attempting to break down the rear door of the building. The door handle was broken off and a few windows were broken. Police are still investigating the incident.
The rear window from a Burdette Street resident's van was broken after a 10-year-old boy threw a rock at it Friday, August 18. The boy's father informed the van owner and called police to file a report for the insurance company. No citation was issued.
A 43-year-old Taylor man was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license on the south end of the Mackinac Bridge Sunday, August 27. Police from Mackinaw City assisted and pulled the vehicle over after the man headed south on the bridge. The case is still under police investigation.
A 26-year-old Illinois man was arrested Saturday, August 19, for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and for not having an operator's license in Michigan. Police pulled him over after he was seen driving erratically on North State Street.
A24-year-old Owosso man was arrested Friday, August 18, for driving with a suspended license and having no proof of insurance. The man told police he had bought the vehicle two weeks ago, and the insurance was still under the previous owner. The case remains under investigation.
Two juveniles from Hessel were apprehended by police on Abe Street and turned over to their grandparents after they allegedly stole a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from a Spruce Street residence. The two juveniles were considered runaways.
A 17-year-old St. Ignace boy was arrested for stealing coolers from a St. Ignace campground Monday, August 21. The coolers contained soda and alcoholic beverages. Police questioned the boy after witnesses described his vehicle. Police found two coolers in his vehicle that matched the reported stolen coolers. The boy initially told police his vehicle had not been operated for weeks and that the coolers in the vehicle were his. When the officer checked the contents of the cooler, finding one was empty and the other was full of ice and beverages, the suspect confessed to stealing the coolers but would not tell police who was with him during the crime.
Police are searching for two young men who allegedly stole a knife from a downtown business Monday, August 21. The suspects are both male. One suspect is about 17 years old, white, but with a dark complexion, and is approximately five feet, seven inches tall. He was wearing long shorts and a dark shirt. The other suspect was about 15 years old, also with a dark complexion, slim, and was about five feet, 11 inches tall, wearing long shorts and a T-shirt.
A 17-year-old St. Ignace boy was arrested on First Street for possession of marijuana in his vehicle Tuesday, August 22. The boy was traveling with two companions and was pulled over by police after going 40 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. The contents, along with a pipe and a small bottle of eye drops, were hidden in a fast food bag on the front passenger side. The boy stated he and his friends were going to football practice, though they were traveling in the wrong direction. He denied knowing that there was marijuana in the vehicle or that the other two passengers knew about the marijuana. The passengers were not cited.
There were a total of 31 reports filed from August 14 to August 28.
