Allen 'Buzz' Martin Allen 'Buzz' Martin Allen W. Martin of Moran was a veteran of World War II, a longtime employee of the United States Forest Service, and Civilian Conservation Corps camp director in Mackinac County.

Known as "Buzz" to friends, Mr. Martin reached 103 years of age Sunday, August 20, before he passed away five days later, Friday, August 25, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care in St. Ignace.

Mr. Martin was born August 20, 1903, to Thomas and Margaret (nee Harris) Martin in Moran, where he lived most of his life. He was the last of 12 children born to the Martins. His 11 siblings, including Irwin, David, Edna, Robert, Harvey, Marjorie, Harry, LaVina, Willard, Arthur, and Gordon all preceded him in death.

Family and friends recall his avid love of the outdoors, and his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, and trapping.

In 1943, at the age of 38, he enlisted in the United States Army, and was able to serve one year before he was discharged "for the convenience of the Government to accept employment in essential war industry," according to his discharge papers. He subsequently was named foreman of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and worked 20 years in forestry.

He married Nina Tally of Smithland, Kentucky in 1959.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nina, of St. Ignace; a niece, Helen Arnston of Traverse City; a nephew, Jack Ryerse of St. Ignace, and several cousins, including Captain Jim and Hilda Ryerse of St. Ignace.

A graveside service will be held at Allenville Cemetery.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.
