Saints JV Football Blanks Charlevoix, 20-0 The St. Ignace junior varsity football squad has suffered seasonopening defeats to Charlevoix the last three seasons by more than 27 points in each contest, but during the 2006 non-conference game the Saints took charge in the second half, leading to a 20-0 win over the Rayders Thursday, August 24, at Saints Field. The teams went scoreless in the first half before the Saints took a 13-0 lead going into the final period. Inside the eight-minute mark of the fourth quarter and with the ball at the St. Ignace 20-yard line, the Saints were flagged with a holding penalty on third down. Charlevoix accepted the penalty and sent the Saints back to the fiveyard line and repeated the third down. Gerrit Mortensen rolled back into the endzone and found a streaking Anthony Lester at the 45yard line. The sophomore snagged the pigskin and dashed into the endzone for the 95-yard touchdown. Andy Tamlyn added the extra point to give St. Ignace a 200 advantage. Zach McFarlane scored the Saints' first touchdown on a fiveyard run and Tamlyn chipped in the extra point for a 7-0 lead in the third quarter. Later in the stanza, the defense set up the second score as Bryant Danielson blocked the Rayders punt and James Halberg recovered the ball, followed by a seven-yard scoring pass from Lester to Mortensen for a 13-0 margin. Andy Tamlyn led the defense with 14 combined tackles and assists and one fumble recovery. Zach McFarlane added nine stops, James Halberg chipped in eight, two sacks, and two fumble recoveries, Stefan Saffian notched eight with one caused fumble, Lance DeKeyser tallied six with one caused fumble and one fumble recovery, Bryant Danielson charted six with one blocked punt and one fumble recovery, Tyler Oja marked six, Rob Robinson, Mike Barthelemy, and Ronnie France counted three, and John Evashevski, Jimmy Campbell, Anthony Lester, and Gerrit Mortensen contributed two each. Offensively the Saints were led by McFarlane, who rushed for 115 yards on 20 carries. Mortensen completed two passes for 101 yards and gained 22 yards on the ground. Lester had one completion for 17 yards and one reception for 95 yards. Robinson notched 31 yards, and Nathan Everson chipped in 11 yards. The Saints will travel to East Jordan to battle the Red Devils Wednesday, August 30, at 6 p.m. |
