Saints Let Home Game Slip Away to Rogers City

Except for one play, St. Ignace dominated the first half and led 14- 6 at halftime, but the Saints let a non-conference football game slip away as the visitors from Rogers City upended the home team 28-14 Friday, September 15, at Saints Field.

Jake Smith led the Saints defense with 12 tackles and three quarterback sacks. Nick Montie added 10 stops, Derek Marshall chipped in eight and one sack, Billy Matson notched seven and two sacks, Jeremiey Lee and James Sayles (two sacks) tallied six, Derek Rountree (fumble recovery), Shane McDonald, Kyle Smock (two sacks and recovered blocked punt), Derek Rutledge, and Derrick Clark charted four each, James Peterson, Stephen Bielat, Mario Calcaterra, Jesse Becker, and Ben Matelski marked two apiece, and Alec Fitzgerald blocked the Hurons' punt.

On offense, the Saints were led by Kyle Spencer with four of 14 passing for 53 yards and rushed for one yard and one touchdown. Derrick Clark had two receptions for 36 yards, James Peterson one reception for 12 yards, Mario Calcaterra had 24 yards rushing and one touchdown, Jesse Becker added 21 yards, Shawn Cowell chipped in 20 yards, and Kyle Smock tallied 13 yards and one reception for five yards.

Rogers City, 4-0 on the season, answered on its first play as Chase McLennan and Bret Karsten combined on an 80-yard scoring strike for a 6-0 lead at the 10:20 mark.

Junior Alec Fitzgerald blocked the Hurons' punt early in the second quarter and with 8:20 left in the first half, Calcaterra scored from seven yards out and Clark added the extra point kick to give the Saints a 7-6 advantage.

St. Ignace scored on the next possession as two pass completions from Spencer to Clark sparked the offense. Three plays later, Spencer plunged over from the one-yard line at 4:13 and Clark charted the extra point kick for a 14-6 halftime margin.

Rogers City took the secondhalf kickoff and marched 61 yards to notch the score at 14 on a sevenyard pass play from McLennan to Karsten.

The Hurons took the lead for good with 33 seconds left in the third quarter on the third scoring pass combination from McLennan to Karsten. Rogers City added the final touchdown on a 35-yard fumble recovery by Tyler Schuiteman in the fourth quarter.

Penalties and turnovers hurt the Saints, especially in the second half. St. Ignace must prepare for an SAC contest at Rudyard Friday, September 22.

Saints JV Downs Hurons

in Offensive Shootout

St. Ignace junior varsity football team tallied 483 yards of offense and scored six touchdowns during the 39-34 shootout road win over Rogers City Thursday, September 14.

Zach McFarlane led the ground attack for the Saints with 206 yards on 26 carries and caught two passes for 12 yards. Ronnie France added 41 yards on the ground and one reception for 12 yards, and Rob Robinson chipped in eight rushing yards and two receptions for 26 yards.

Gerrit Mortensen completed four of five passes for 155 yards and rushed for 12 yards. Anthony Lester completed five of 12 passes for 50 yards, caught two passes for 121 yards, and rushed for 11 yards. Bobby LaDuke chipped in one reception for 31 yards, and Tyler Oja one reception for three yards.

Andy Tamlyn and Cody Canell led the defense with eight tackles each. Lance DeKeyser chipped in six, James Halberg notched five, McFarlane (fumble recovery) and Lester tallied four, Jordan Bruce, Mortensen, and Oja (interception) charted three, Bryant Danielson and Billy Grogan marked two, and Eric Brown, Jimmy Campbell, Jayson Fenlon, Stefan Saffian, France, and Robinson counted one each.

The Saints scored two firstquarter TDs on completions from Mortensen to Lester from 77 and 44 yards out, for a 12-6 lead.

St. Ignace took a 20-6 lead at the 2:06 of the second quarter on a McFarlane 15-yard run and twopoint conversion pass from Lester to Oja. The Saints scored with no time on the clock on a 31-yard pass from Mortensen to LaDuke, for a 26-16 halftime advantage.

The Saints extended the lead to 33-12 as Lester scored from four yards out and Tamlyn kicked the extra point. France closed out the scoring with a 25-yard run early in the final period.
