The Saints' Jessica Massaway (12) hampers the Hurons (12) with tough defense during the St. Ignace win over Rogers City. St. Ignace and Rogers City battled to a 23-23 halftime score before the Saints took control in the Straits Area Conference (SAC) contest to record a 56-41 decision for their first win of the season Tuesday, September 12.

"Little things added up to positive things and that was the difference," said Saints Coach Dorene Ingalls. "We are starting to come together and each practice and game situation, we see improvements."

Kelsey Cryderman scored 14 points, Amanda Coveyou added 13 points and five blocked shots, Jodie Langstaff chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, Sarah Schafer notched 11, Jessica Massaway tallied four, and Marcie Rickley charted three.

Rogers City used an 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead at 4:14 of the first quarter, and still held a 13-6 margin before the Saints answered with an 8-0 advantage of their own for a 14- 13 scoring edge with one minute left in the quarter. The Hurons scored the final field goal of the first eight minutes, for a 15-14 margin.

St. Ignace, 1-1 in the SAC, held a 9-8 scoring edge in the second quarter to send the game into halftime

tied at 23.

The Saints took the lead for good with a 5-0 margin to begin the second half and, with their strong defensive effort, continued to build on their lead as Cryderman scored seven, all from the free throw line, and Langstaff notched seven, as St. Ignace outscored Rogers City 22-11 for a 45-34 lead after three quarters.

"Our defensive pressure, going after the loose basketball, and better shooting turned the tide, especially in the third quarter," added Ingalls. "We need to keep that pressure for our offense to jell."

St. Ignace closed out the game with an 11-7 scoring edge in the final period to post the team's first win overall and in the league.

The Saints scored 19 field goals, two treys, and 16 of 38 (42 percent) from the free throw line. The Hurons made 15 field goals and 11 of 25 (44 percent) from the charity stripe.
