Pickford Downs St. Ignace, Undefeated in EUPC

Pickford girls basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season after a 64-46 non-league win over St. Ignace Thursday, September 14, and continues to remain undefeated (4-0) in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference with a 61-38 win over Brimley Tuesday, September 12.
Jessie Ledy led the Pickford offense with 16 points. Caitlin Mortinsen added 13, Chelsey O'Connor chipped in nine, Renae Reich notched eight, Veronica Gough charted six, Melissa Kucharczyk tallied five, and Savannah Sterling marked three against the Saints.
Amanda Coveyou scored 14 points for St. Ignace. Jessica Massaway chipped in nine, Marcie Rickley and Sarah Schafer added six, Jodie Langstaff charted five, and Stacee Schnicke tallied two.
The Panthers have numerous team strengths and they were apparent in the win over the Saints.
Pickford led 15-11 after the Panthers closed out the first eight minutes with a 7-2 advantage.
The Panthers held a 21-16 margin with 4:45 remaining in the first half before outscoring the Saints 18-4 that included the final seven points by Ledy to end the second quarter.
Pickford continued to build on its lead with a 19-8 advantage in the third quarter before St. Ignace completed the game with an 18-6 margin in the final period.
Panthers Perfect in EUPC
Jessie Ledy scored 17 points and Veronica Gough added 15 to lead the Panthers over the Bays. Melissa Kucharczyk chipped in 10 points, Courtney Bruni notched six, Caitlin Mortinsen tallied five, and Chelsey O'Connor and Renae Reich both charted four.
Jessica Graham scored 11 points for Brimley, Carrie and Amber Aikens charted eight each, Jenna Somes chipped in five, Courtney Amble notched four, and Marissa Lawson tallied two.
Both teams scored 12 points in the first eight minutes before the Panthers took control by outscoring the Bays 20-6 in the second quarter, for a 32-18 halftime lead.
Pickford continued to dominate with a 16-11 advantage in the third quarter and 13-9 in the final period.
Pickford JV Downs Saints, Bays
Pickford junior varsity defeated St. Ignace 48-38 and Brimley 44- 21. In the win over the Saints, Jasmine Ledy scored 26 points including three triples, Jenna Ledy and Katie Jenkins added nine, and Callie Smith chipped in two.
Kristen Olsen scored 12 points and Sam Radecki added 10 to lead the Saints, while Mallory LaLonde chipped in seven, Kayla Gustin notched five, and Brooke Allan and Chelsea Swope both tallied two.
Jenna Ledy led the Panthers with 11 points in the win over Brimley, while Jasmine Ledy added eight, Genie Gagnon, Jamie Rifenberg, Rachel Schmitigal, and Katie Jenkins notched four each, Krista Esslin tallied three, Callie Smith charted two, and Abby Rose and Amber Hill both marked one.
Bays Claw Black Bears
The Aikens sisters combined for 33 points to lead Brimley to a 66-33 non-conference win over Big Bay de Noc Saturday, September 9.
Amber Aikens scored 17 points, Carrie Aikens added 16, Jessica Graham chipped in 11, Sydney Wilson notched seven, Kelly Graham tallied six, Amy Wieczorek charted four, Courtney Amble marked three, and Jenna Somes counted two.
Brimley led 37-15 at halftime and outscored the Black Bears 29- 18 in the second half to post the win.
