C.Y. Bennett returned from Detroit Monday morning. While there, he purchased a winter's supply of dry goods for his store in Les Cheneaux.
The newsy and well edited Cheboygan News has successfully passed the sixth year of its existence with brighter prospects than ever. Success to brother Smyth.
The early season for deer shooting in this peninsula brings many lower Michigan sportsmen to this section. Deer are reported more plentiful this season than ever before.
News comes to this office to the effect that the Mackinaw Lumber Company is slowly but surely closing out their business in this section. They have sold nearly all of their timbered lands and their heretofore extensive dealings have dwindled down to "business on a small scale."
A petition was circulated throughout the city this week by Chas. Grondin, of St. Ignace township, in which it was requested that the people of this city and vicinity would contribute one dollar or more for the purpose of making improvements on roads in St. Ignace township.
The first snow of the season fell Tuesday.

The annual fair of the Brevort Agricultural association at Allenville will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
The launch Francis F. was nearly wrecked on Scott's Point, Lake Michigan, last week, when her engine broke down during a hard blow.
The 33rd regiment of the Michigan National Guard, which as been stationed at Grayling for some time, has been ordered to the Mexican border. The regiment is made up largely of Upper Peninsula companies.
A crowd gathered in Curtis on the new bridge to have photos taken.
The first snow of the season fell Friday, September 29.
The telephone exchange in the Les Cheneaux area will probably not be operated as during the past two winters, but the phones will be connected on two lines and operated from Pickford.

Chamber of Commerce and City of St. Ignace officials went on record this week favoring a proposition designed to obtain the state ferry docks here as a public utility of the city. E.G. McNamara Jr., speaking for a Chamber of Commerce committee consisting of Marvin Winkelman, Dr. A.D. McKinnon, and Don Moffatt, told the council Monday that St. Ignace should move at once to inform the state highway department that the city is interested in obtaining control of the state ferry docks when they are abandoned after the bridge is built.
Jack Barnhill was presented with the coveted James I. LaRoque trophy by Billy LaRoque, son of the late James I. LaRoque, for winning the 1956 championship at the St. Ignace Golf and Country Club.
A general meeting of the Alvin A. Hossack Memorial Field Committee was held at the Clark township hall Friday, September 28. Plans for the field are drawn up and will be sent as a box holder to the Les Cheneaux community. Work is slated to begin right after the end of the football season.

On November 1, the Coast Guard's SK-5 Cushion Vehicle will arrive in St. Ignace to undergo extensive tests at the local station during the fall and winter.
The multi-purpose building at the McCann Street School, which has been talked about and planned for over a two-year period, opened its doors to serve 256 students and about 20 adults on Monday, October 4.
Larry Rubin was named St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce's
Citizen of the Year" at its annual banquet at Shores Restaurant and Lounge September 30.
St. Ignace's football team came up with its second shut-out in a row as they posted an impressive 34-0 win over Charlevoix last Friday. The Saints face their toughest test this Friday when they travel to Cheboygan to take on the powerful Chiefs, who have defeated Gaylord 46-6, Petoskey 6-0, and Boyne City 32-6. The game is a battle for first place in the conference. This week's Saints of the week were Tim and Tom Huskey and Les Therrian.

Nicole Schlehuber was crowned homecoming queen during half-time of the St. Ignace- Petoskey game September 27. The Saints won 35-0. Queen candidates included Christy Mapes, Andrea Anderson, and Hayley Pierson.
Monitoring of the St. Ignace water system for zebra mussels will begin this fall, following the discovery of colonies of the tiny Great Lakes invaders around at least one of the city's docks. Divers found 100 or more of the mussels recently at Dock 3.
Chet Kasper, Clark Township's fire chief of 17 years, was named Person of the Year by the Les Cheneaux Chamber of Commerce at its annual banquet September 25.
