Cedarville Suffers Disappointing Defeat in Regional Finals, 59-53

Cedarville used pressure defense, timely r e b o u n d i n g , and balanced scoring (seven players scored) to build a 33- 2 0 - h a l f t i m e advantage.

Rapid River opened the first eight minutes of the game with a 6-3 lead before the Trojans outscored the Rockets 18-7,as the Trojans offense in the first half was led by Billie McLeod's nine points and Emily Feldhake's eight points. Caitlin Wright chipped in five, Jessie Duncan notched four, Kara Griffin charted three, and Lindsay McLeod and Ashley Sweeney tallied two each.

On the defensive end, Griffin held the Rockets' Lauren Marshall to just five first-half points, while the rebounding efforts of Feldhake and the McLeod sisters helped the Trojans separate themselves from the Rockets on the scoreboard.

The sound of the halftime buzzer was, at that point, the only thing that halted Cedarville's offensive pressure in the first half.

The Rockets regrouped after halftime, starting the second half with renewed enthusiasm. Using a full court press defense, the Rockets tied the game at the 6:15 mark, erasing a 13-point deficit.

Rapid River's defense did not allow Cedarville past half court during its second half comeback during the offensive run.

Katie Erickson opened the third quarter with a field goal, followed by baskets from Ronni Furlong, Lauren Marshall, and Lindsey Monticello before Jullian Deneau hit a two-pointer. She then notched the score at 33 with a triple, with only 1:45 gone in the third quarter.

Duncan answered back for the Trojans with a triple of her own at 5:02. The teams then traded points for the rest of the quarter, which ended with Cedarville holding a slim 43-42 lead.

Duncan started the fourth quarter with her third trey for a 46-42 Trojans lead, but the Rockets' Erickson and Furlong scored a basket each to tie the game before Billie McLeod and Emily Feldhake answered for the Trojans to take a 50-46 advantage with 3:18 on the clock.

Marshall, who scored 15 second half points, hit a triple to close the margin to 50-49. After two successful free throws from Caitlin Wright, Marshall drained her fourth triple of the game and then made a steal to assist on a two-point shot by Bonnie Cartwright, extending the Rockets lead to three with 1:12 remaining in the game.

Cedarville with one minute left to cut the Rockets lead to 54-53. Rapid River clinched the game by draining five of six free throws down the stretch.

Seniors Emily Feldhake, Kara Griffin, and Lindsay McLeod played their final game for the Trojans.

Cedarville made 20 field goals, four three-pointers, and went nine for 13 from the free throw line. Rapid River made 24 field goals, six triples, and was five of six from the free throw line.
