Mackinac Island defeated Maplewood Baptist Academy in three out of five matches in volleyball.
The Black Bears won the first match 28-26. Then the Lakers took the next two, 25-16 and 25-15. Maplewood rebounded and won the fourth match 25-22. Mackinac Island won the deciding match 15- 11.

Lakers First Defeat
Maplewood Baptist Academy defeated Mackinac Island 50-44 Thursday, December 21, in the first setback this season for the Lakers.
Mackinac Island opened the season with seven consecutive victories before suffering the non-conference defeat.
The Lakers held a 10-9-scoring edge after the first eight minutes before the Black Bears outscored the Lakers 14-3 in the second quarter for a 23-13-halftime advantage.
Maplewood increased the lead to 30-17 at the 5:24 mark as Brad Shaw, who scored 12 points in the first three quarters, hit a threepointer and a two-point field goal to begin the second half.
The Lakers have three sisters playing on the volleyball team (from left): Karlena, Shayleen, and Shelbie Mosley. The Lakers regrouped to outscore the Black Bears 14-2, which included the final 12 points of the quarter, closing the margin to 32-31.
Michael Gamble scored to open the fourth quarter to give the Lakers its first lead (33-32) since the opening quarter. Allen Orr converted a three-point play for Maplewood and Woody Beardsley made two free throws to tie the score at 35, with 6:26 remaining in the game.
Shaw continued his offensive strength with six points to lift the Black Bears to a 15-9 advantage, clinching the road win.

Lakers Sweep Ojibwe
Mackinac Island swept Ojibwe of Brimley 86-42 in basketball and the Lakers volleyball team upended Ojibwe 25-15, 25-22, and 25-10 Tuesday, December 19.

Maplewood Baptist Academy swept Ojibwe 83-52 on the hardwood and the Black Bears volleyball team downed Ojibwe 25-16, 25-10, 18-25, and 25-16 Monday, December 18.
