U.S. Coast Guard Urges Boaters To Follow Safety Steps

The U.S. Coast Guard is urging boaters to follow safety steps when heading out into the Great Lakes. The request follows a recent surge in false alarms that have cost taxpayers more than $40,000 in search and rescue services.

The Coast Guard asks boaters to file a float plan by telling a friend or family member exactly where and when they will be boating and returning to shore. Signaling devices onboard the vessel will help improve the chances of being rescued if an

emergency occurs. Boaters should wear lifejackets; 86 percent of drowning victims have not been wearing the safety device. Finally, a marine radio or cell phone onboard is suggested and phones should be placed in waterproof bags.
