Mackinac Island

Father Rey Garcia of Ste. To Native Americans, tobacco is the unifying thread of communication between humans and the spiritual powers.
The past weekend brought many visitors to Mackinac. Although the weather was cold and rainy on Friday, it was beautiful Saturday. Everyone enjoyed Main and Market Streets with the many sales. It's a great time to do some Christmas shopping.

Sad news was heard by all over the Island Sunday morning as friends learned of the death of longtime resident Dick Bagbey, who was employed for many years at Arnold Transit Company. A complete obituary appears in this week's issue of The St. Ignace News. Deepest sympathy to the family from Island friends.

Peggy Wickman of Wilmette, Illinois, has been the guest of her aunt and cousin, Helga Doud and Anna Mary and Gary Cusack. Peggy spent many summers on Mackinac at her parents' cottage on the East Bluff.

Greetings to Marian Petersen, mother of Marta Olson, who is still a patient at Boulder Terrace in Charlevoix. Island friends send best wishes.

I'm sorry that I made a mistake in Sara and Greg Sutherland's wedding anniversary. It's September 11, not October 11. All of your Island friends hope you had a wonderful day.

Trish, Mike, and Mike Gamble Jr. had a great weekend of football. They attended the Michigan game in Ann Arbor Saturday, September 23, and they enjoyed the Lions/Packers game Sunday, September 24. They had a great time.

Janey Hart left Mackinac Monday for her winter home in Washington, D.C. She and her dog, Rosie, spent the summer on her sailboat at the marina in St. Ignace. Happy birthday to Janey October 20. Have a wonderful winter.

The descendants of Frank Rounds (builder of the Round Island Lighthouse) gathered on Mackinac for their 11th annual family reunion Friday, September 22, and Saturday, September 23. Many social activities were planned for the three-day event, including an intimate gathering hosted by Dale and Georgianna Gensmen at the Lang House, a catered dinner at the Community Hall, tours of the Island, children's games, and loads of laughter. Everyone enjoyed a great time. Dale was born on Mackinac.

Dee and Dick Czapek of Grand Rapids are visiting Dee's sister, Candy Smith and family. It's so nice to see you back on Mackinac.

Colton Fisher celebrated his 10th birthday September 23 with a small family gathering. Honored guests at the birthday party were Jennifer and Frank Bloswick. Happy birthday, Colton, from all your Island friends.

Happy birthday September 25 to Don Howe of St. Ignace. He and his wife, Alice, were guests of the Windermere Hotel on Mackinac Monday night.

Brother Jim Boynton, S.J. visited Mackinac Sunday evening. Nice to have you back on the Island.

Nick Haan of Wisconsin, and manager of Haan's 1830 Inn, enjoyed the weekend on the Island and participated in the Falling Leaves Festival.

It's Tuesday, September 26, a beautiful warm sunny day, quite a contrast from Monday. We're happy and pleased for the crew painting Margaret Doud's Geranium Cottage on Market Street. Enjoy the merry sunshine.

Tucker Bunker of Georgia, son of Tip Bunker, visited relatives on the Island the week of September 18. He took his cousins, Irene Rickley and Caroline LaPine, to the buffet at Grand Hotel. After lunch, they all enjoyed a carriage ride around Mackinac with Dan Mitchell as their guide. They all had a wonderful time.

Gary and Karen Lennard are going to Sylvania, Ohio, this weekend to celebrate their grandson, Ray Lennard's, birthday October 2. He visited the Island this summer and is looking forward to coming back next year. Happy birthday, Ray, from your Island friends.

Word was received at the Mackinac Island Public School from former superintendent Bruce Wolck, that his wife, Helen, passed away Saturday, September 16. His address is: P.O. Box 26, Lake Linden, MI 49945. Deepest sympathy from Island friends.

Tim Timmons will celebrate his birthday September 30. Have a wonderful day.

Family and friends gathered at the Island Cemetery Saturday, September 23, to pay their last respects to the former First Lady of Michigan, Nancy Williams Gram, who was laid to rest next to her husband, Governor G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams. Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Marquette James Kelsey officiated at the graveside service. The morning was warm and beautiful as the season of autumn has brilliantly colored the fall leaves. The family spent many happy summers at the Governor's residence and later at their lovely cottage on the West Bluff. In memory of Mrs. Williams Gram: "Beauteous Isle! I sing to thee, Mackinac, my Mackinac; thy lake-bound shores I love to see, Mackinac, my Mackinac."

Anneke and Matt Myers will celebrate their anniversary October 2. Enjoy your day.

Happy birthday to Tyler Finkel October 1. Hope that your freshman year at Michigan State University is going well.

Our good friend, Ernie Glashaw of St. Ignace, has a birthday October 2. Have a wonderful day.

Jamie Bynoe entertained friends at a tailgate party Sunday, September 24, for the Lions/Packers game. There was lots of good food, excitement, and fun. All of his friends look forward to the next party. A special surprise at the party was a birthday cake for his neighbor, Sherry Rayha, who was totally overwhelmed to be remembered by her good friend.

Happy anniversary to Elliot and Rita Sue Cohen October 3, and to their good friends, Brad and Sheryl Conkey. Special greetings from Island friends.

Nancy and Larry Keogh, who enjoyed the entire summer at their East Bluff cottage "Crosstrees," departed Sunday, September 24, for their home in Lake Forest, Illinois. Have a good winter.

Addison Leveille, daughter of Tim and Erin of Newburgh, Indiana, will celebrate her first birthday October 4. She is the niece of Kevin Leveille and the granddaughter of Pat and Louie Leveille of St. Ignace.

Tom Cleary and his son, Joe, of East Lansing attended the service for Mrs. Williams Gram Saturday, September 23.

The Mackinac Island Lakers soccer team traveled to Hannaville Friday, September 22, where they played one game on Friday and a second game Saturday. The Lakers won both games. Monday afternoon, at the Mark Gallagher Memorial Field, the Mackinac Island Lakers defeated the Ojibway team. Go Lakers!

Saturday, September 23, a beautiful wedding ceremony was held at Ste. Anne's Catholic Church uniting Tricia Bacon and Ben Robinson, son of Dr. Robert Robinson and the late Kathleen Robinson of Petoskey, in holy matrimony, with Father Jim Williams officiating. Happy is the bride the sun shines on. The day was made for a beautiful bride, warm with brilliant sunshine. Tricia, the daughter of Dr. Mike and Jane Bacon, was a radiant bride. A reception followed at the Inn at Stonecliffe. Congratulations and best wishes to Tricia and Ben, who are enjoying a wedding trip in Europe.

Mary K. McIntire was the guest of honor at a delightful birthday party at the Carriage House Wednesday, September 20, hosted by her mother, Margaret. A delicious dinner was enjoyed, followed by a special birthday cake. Guests were treated to a magnificent sight as the setting sun cast its brilliant rays on the Straits of Mackinac, creating a rainbow over Bois Blanc.

Best wishes to our good friend, Jerry Horn, who underwent open heart surgery last week at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Jerry is progressing slowly and would love to hear from his many friends on Mackinac. Please send him a card.
