This September 26 photograph of the new senior citizen housing complex on State Street and Lake Avenue in St. Ignace shows the construction work accomplished since ground was broken Friday, June 23.
The 24-unit housing project will occupy approximately 28,000 square feet on the site of the former Mackinac County Road Commission
garage. Although work is not expected to be finished until February 1, 2007, 37 senior citizens have already expressed interest in applying for the apartments, reported Don Wright of Community Action Agency, which will manage the apartment building.
Applications will be mailed to those who have expressed interest, as well as be made available to
others, in the next week, he said, and apartments will be available as applications are turned in, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Many of those who are interested in the new apartments come from St. Ignace's surrounding areas, Mr. Wright said, including Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac counties. Some are applying from other
similar housing complexes, and 12 are seniors who currently live in their own homes and want the convenience of senior apartment living. Rent at the new complex will most likely begin at $250 per month, and range upward according to income guidelines, Mr. Wright said.
The $2.5 million project was first announced in January.
