Moran's Bradford Building To Be Demolished; New Fire Hall Discussed The old Bradford building in Moran is scheduled for demolition by Saturday, October 28. Maverick Construction was awarded the contract at the regular Brevort Township meeting Tuesday, September 5. The company will remove the building and replace it with a parking lot for $44,820, said supervisor Ed Serwach. The project should take about two days to complete, and the township plans to "dress up" the remaining lots with landscaping, as part of Moran's continuing beautification efforts, Mr. Serwach said. "The building was dangerous. It's a big load off my mind," he added, citing the potential for injuries to anyone entering and exploring the dilapidated building. In other business, the board passed a motion, made by trustee Vern Erskine, to begin research into building a new fire hall with existing fire department funding. The project is "in its infancy" and "there's not much to work with," Mr. Serwach told The St. Ignace News. Following the township meeting, the board met with Fire Chief Mark Peterson, First Assistant Chief Wayne Peterson, Assistant Chiefs Burt Rutledge and Don Lugering, and Lieutenant Chuck Litzner to discuss the effort. The township is seeking builders and prices now, Chief Peterson said. A new fire hall is considered essential for keeping the department's gear in working order, since the existing fire hall is full of leaks and seepage that pose a threat to electrical equipment. The moisture "isn't doing the fire truck any good, either," Mr. Serwach added. "We'd like to have a new fire truck and a new barn," Mr. Peterson added, but a more modern truck wouldn't fit in the existing fire hall, so the priority is the barn. The department is developing new design plans now, he added. |
