Free Throws Lift St. Ignace Over Bays, 47-41, in Home Finale

St. Ignace girls basketball team outscored Brimley 19-8 from the free throw line to lift the Saints to a 47-41 non-conference win over the Bays in front of a parents-night crowd at LaSalle High School Thursday, November 9, and the Saints fell to Cheboygan 55-27 in a Straits Area Conference (SAC) contest Friday, November 10.

It was the final home game for seniors Kelsey Cryderman, Sarah Schafer, and Erica Ahlich and managers Chantelle Cook and Jessica McGinnis.

It appeared that the Saints were going to run away with the game early, after leading 12-4 at the 2:08 mark, as four players scored for the Saints before Brimley scored the final five points of the first eight minutes and then opened the second quarter with two free throws to slice the home team's lead to 12- 11.

The Saints never relinquished the lead, but the pesky Bays kept coming back after St. Ignace built what seemed comfortable advantages.

St. Ignace closed out the final 4:54 of the first half with a 10-3 margin for a 25-16 halftime score as Kelsey Cryderman scored nine and A m a n d a Coveyou added six for the Saints, while Carrie Aikens notched 10 for the Bays.

Brimley cut the St. Ignace lead to 32-28 after three quarters with a 12-7 margin as Amber Aikens scored six points and closed the Saints lead to two points early in the final period.

Coveyou, Rickley, and Schafer combined for 14 of the 15 fourth quarter points for the Saints to build a 47-35 lead before the Bays answered with the final six points of the game.

for Saints Against Cheboygan

The Saints offense stalled in the second quarter against the Cheboygan Chiefs in Friday's game, the final regular season game for the Saints. Trailing by only four points in the first quarter, the Saints managed only three in the second.

Cheboygan led 13-9 after the first eight minutes and outscored St. Ignace 14-3 in the second quarter for a 27-12 halftime lead.

The Chiefs held a 13-10 scoring edge in the third quarter for a 40- 22 lead and completed the SAC game with a 15-5 advantage.

Late in the game, Amanda Coveyou went down with an ankle injury, leaving her condition questionable for the districts.

With the loss to the Chiefs, the Saints finish the year with a 4-6 record in the SAC and 5-15 record overall.

The Chiefs clinched a share of the SAC title with a 9-1 record and 19-1 overall and were led by Christy Stempky with 13 points. Amanda Blaskowski chipped in 11.

Saints JV Split

The St. Ignace junior varsity team split its final two games of the season, defeating Brimley 45- 37 before falling to Cheboygan 48- 40, for a 10-10 overall record on the season. Saints Stats vs Bays: Chelsea
