Tahquamenon Schools Receives $250 Grant for DNR Resources

The public library at Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry received a $250 Community Forestry Grant for library materials. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) awarded the grant and a total of $85,095 in 24 Community Forestry Grants this month.

The competitive grant program is a cooperative effort between the DNR, USDA Forest Service, and the Michigan Urban and Community Forestry Council. Funds are awarded to projects that preserve and expand existing community tree cover, develop longterm community forestry plans, create and maintain ecosystembased sustainable urban and community forests, and educate the public about the benefits of trees and natural resources.

Cost-share funds are available to local communities, schools, and nonprofit entities. Grants require dollar-to-dollar matching funds toward projects performed on nonfederal, public lands, or lands open to the public. Grants are for projects that will be finished by September 2007.

Applications for the next round of grants are available by calling DNR Urban and Community Forester Kevin Sayers at (517) 241-4632, or visiting the DNR Web site at www.mi.gov/dnrucf.
