Walter Butkovich

Former owner and operator of Butkovich Oil Company, Walter Butkovich, 74, of Engadine, died November 24, 2006, at his home while under the care of North Woods Hospice and his family.

He was born February 24, 1932 in Engadine, the son of Frank and Dera (nee Stimac) Butkovich.

A 1951 graduate of Engadine High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and worked for Standard Oil Company until he moved back to Engadine in 1967. He owned and operated Butkovich Oil Company for several years and later was employed by the Mackinac County Housing Commission until his retirement.

Mr. Butkovich was a member of VFW Post 8372 and he enjoyed coin collecting, polka music, dancing, casino gaming, woodworking, and the outdoors.

Mr. Butkovich is survived by his wife, Joyce (nee Bennett) of Engadine, and two children and their families, Debra and Joseph Herbig of Pickford and Darwin and Sherri of Engadine, three grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren. He also is survived by three brothers and their families, all from Engadine, Roy and Janis, Don and Cathy, Art and Peg; two sisters and their families, Mary and Bill Edwards of Engadine, Betty and Ed Mantei of Engadine, and Rose and Pete Anderson of Newberry; two sisters in-law, Judy Butkovich of Powers and Stephanie Butkovich of Livonia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Richard, Jim, Edward, and Victor.

Services were held Tuesday, November 28, at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with the Reverend Saundra Clark officiating. Interment followed at the Engadine Cemetery.
