Stephen Bartholomew

Stephen Bartholomew of Engadine was a physician assistant who traveled throughout the world as a medical missionary. Mr. Bartholomew died unexpectedly at the age of 55 Sunday, January 7, 2007.

He was born November 29, 1951, in Detroit to Raymond and Margaret (nee Ronan) Bartholomew. He was a graduate of Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights, and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from Wayne State University. Mr. Bartholomew furthered his education at the University of Detroit-Mercy, earning a Bachelors of Science degree with certification as a physician assistant and finally a Master's Degree in Education.

Mr. Bartholomew was employed as the director of the physician assistant program at the University of Detroit-Mercy, and later as a tenured professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. For several years, he was a practicing physician assistant in Michigan and California. Mr. Bartholomew worked as a medical missionary in many world locations, primarily in Third World countries.

He married Caryn Hadley August 20, 1994, in Engadine.

Mr. Bartholomew had been a resident of Engadine for the past four years and was employed as a physician assistant in the area. He attended the United Methodist Church in Engadine and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, photography, woodworking, writing, reading, and traveling. Friends said Mr. Bartholomew was a loving husband and father who most enjoyed spending his time with his family.

He is survived by his wife; two children and their families, Breanna and Brian Ferriby of Berkley and Michael and Maria of Engadine; his parents, Raymond and Margaret Batholomew of Royal Oak; a grandson, Daniel Ferriby of Berkley; siblings and their families, Cathay and Rick Cox of Oxford, Christine Barrett of Rochester, Michael and Diane of Royal Oak, Patrick and Dolores of Fraser, and Peter of Sterling Heights; brothers-in-law and their families, Craig Hadley of Brandon Township, Cameron and Joy Hadley of Marquette, and Christopher and Hill Hadley of Goodrich; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chandler and Carole Hadley of Brandon Township, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Stephen Bartholomew was held Saturday, January 13, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Newberry with the Reverend Sandra Kolder officiating. Friends called at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Engadine Consolidated Schools Foundation of Educational Excellence at W13920 Melville Street in Engadine.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.
