      The scenic harbor view from the St. Ignace waterfront is a most cherished part of the community, the St. Ignace Planning Commission was told by at least 30 people attending a public hearing Wednesday, January 24. Federal Protection Removed From Wolves
States, Tribes Now Responsible for Management
      The United States Fish and Wildlife Service removed federal protection from gray wolves in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and in portions of six other states Monday, January 29. State wildlife managers and American Indian tribes are now responsible for determining how to classify and manage the animal.

Clark Twp. Raises Sewer Rates to $46
      Clark Township residents will see higher sewer bills in March, when quarterly rates are increased from $40 to $46. The increase was adopted, 3-2, at a special board meeting in December, and trustees decided January 18 to notify customers via letter.

Walk forWarmth To Raise Home Heating Funds Sat.
      Community Action Agency is holding its annual Mackinac County Walk for Warmth in St. Ignace Saturday, February 3. The goal is to raise money to benefit people in need of home heating assistance, as well as to promote awareness regarding the needs of the less fortunate in the community, said Don Wright, outreach worker for Community Action Agency.

Snowmobile Speed Limit Set at 25 mph on Mackinac Island State Roads
      An experimental snowmobile speed limit of 25 miles per hour has been established for designated state roads on Mackinac Island. While speed limit signs will not be posted, required permits to operate snowmobiles on park roads will contain the stipulation that riders are not to exceed the 25 mile per hour limit.

County To Consult Auditor on Animal Shelter Issues
      Mackinac County commissioners have put the brakes on any decisions regarding the county animal shelter until they can meet with their auditor, who believes contracts with volunteers there need to address issues of liability and animal adoption fees.

Public Asked To Review County Master Plan in February
      Mackinac County's Master Plan moved one step closer to formal adoption, with commissioners agreeing, January 25, to ask the public to review it beginning in February. Dean Reid of the county planning commission asked commissioners to take the step so the document can be formally adopted this year. State law gives local governments 65 days to review a draft plan.
