Paquin To Show Native Crafts
Artists Ron Paquin and Zoey Wood-Salomon will provide demonstrations at Alberta House gallery in Sault Ste. Marie at an open house Saturday, February 3. Both will be demonstrating between noon and 4 p.m. Mr. Paquin will demonstrate native crafts and Ms. Wood- Salomon will be painting. Both will have work available for sale. The Sault Area Arts Council has moved its shop to the south side of Alberta House.
Mr. Paquin is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and widely known as a craftsman and teacher, skilled in traditional native crafts. He was artistin residence at the Museum of Ojibwe Culture at St. Ignace for 16 years and was the recipient of the Michigan Heritage Award in 2003.
Ms. Wood-Salomon is from the Odawa Nation, Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island, but now lives in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. She has displayed widely and won many awards, both in Canada and in the United States, the most recent being the Best of Show Award in the Sault Summer Arts Festival last year.
Alberta House Arts Center is owned and operated by the Sault Area Arts Council, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote arts in the Sault area. The building at 217 Ferris Street, houses the Olive Craig Gallery and a consignment shop that carries work by local artists and craftsmen. During February, a retrospective, multimedia exhibition by Kyung Hatfield will fill both of the galleries. Winter hours for Alberta House are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
