Meeting in Pickford To Cover Milk Production Costs, Farmers' Market
A Tuesday, February 20, informational meeting in Pickford will help answer questions about milk production, and open discussion about farmers' markets.
The meeting will be at 11 a.m., at the Sundown Lounge on M-129 in Pickford, and will feature Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) speakers Warren Schauer and Jim Lucas.
Mr. Schauer is a farm management educator and will discuss the cost of production on the dairy farm. He will discuss how to develop a sound, working knowledge of a farm's cost of producing one hundred pounds of milk, and how to develop good marketing, risk management, and a profit program.
He will use actual financial data from Upper Peninsula dairy farms that has been collected over the years. He will also discuss income and cost factors characteristic of the Upper Peninsula dairy industry.
He will demonstrate a cost of production worksheet that farmers can use to help determine their own production costs.
Mr. Lucas is an educator and the director of MSU Extension in Chippewa County. He has worked with many local farmers to coordinate the Sault Ste. Marie Farmers Market, which sells produce and other goods weekly in the summer and fall production months.
The meeting is free and open to anyone from the public with an interest. Participants will buy their own lunch.
