Chippewa Co. Flu Case Confirmed

2007-02-08 / News

Chippewa County confirmed its first case of influenza Friday, January 26, and officials are encouraging the public to get vaccinated. The Chippewa County Health Department has vaccine available, which is free for children six months to 18 years old. Adults pay $10.

Influenza is a respiratory illness with symptoms including high fever, coughing, and intense muscle aches. It normally lasts three to four days but can last longer. Influenza can have deadly consequences for the elderly, chronically ill, children, and others who have weakened immune systems. Health Department workers encourage the public to cover their mouths and noses when coughing, and to wash hands frequently.

The influenza case in Chippewa County was confirmed by a test at War Memorial Hospital. Health workers sent the specimen to a state laboratory for further sub-typing.

To make a vaccination appointment at the Chippewa County Health Center, call (906) 635-2572.
