The St. Ignace based U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay transported a 67-year-old man with chest pains from the Beaver Island Rural Health Center Saturday morning, January 27. Emergency medical technicians from the clinic treated the man aboard the 140-foot cutter.
The ship transferred the man to awaiting East Jordan Emergency Medical Services on shore in Charlevoix.
The Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Traverse City was en route to conduct the medical evacuation Friday evening when it was forced to return to base owing to freezing rain. The Biscayne Bay was called in to assist from breaking ice at Rock Island Pass.
