Engadine Beats DeTour, Newberry; Moves to 7-5 on Season

Daron Emery Engadine Daron Emery Engadine The Engadine basketball team improved to 7-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference after defeating DeTour 66-42 Friday, February 2, and Newberry 52-37 Tuesday, January 30.

"The key to the win at DeTour was our ball movement on offense, boxing out on the boards, and early offensive success," said Eagles Coach Elmer Albright. "This was a solid win."

"We came out flat," said Raiders Coach Craig Miller. "We are a better team than we showed against Engadine."

The Eagles outscored the Raiders 20-8 in the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 39-22 at halftime with a 19-14 score in the second quarter.

Engadine continued to keep DeTour at bay with a 14-11 advantage in the third quarter, a 53-33 lead, and closed out the league win with a 13-9 scoring edge in the final period.

DeTour won the junior varsity game defeating Engadine 75-49. (No individual statistics were available.)

Defense Lifts Eagles

Over Indians

Defense made the difference in the Eagles non-league win over Newberry.

"We didn't let Newberry get on an offensive roll," said Albright. "Our press lifted our defense and we pushed the ball on offense."

The Eagles led 13-10 after the first eight minutes and opened a 27-19 halftime lead after outscoring the Indians 14-9 in the second quarter.

Engadine held a 12-4 offensive advantage in the third quarter for a 39-23 lead before Newberry closed out the game with a 14-13 scoring edge in the final period.

The Panthers will entertain Pickford Friday, February 9, and travel to Rapid River Tuesday, February 13.

Make-up Game With Big Bay

The Engadine, Big Bay de Noc basketball game that was postponed from Friday, January 26, will be made up Thursday, February 22, at Engadine High School.
